Ripped Out More Carpet and New Bed

I had a busy few days. My sister went to our local fair and purchased a tempurpedic bed. We'd been planning on purchasing a new queen bed as our king bed was over fifteen years old and difficult to get a good nights sleep with. Since she purchased a new bed, she was willing to give us her old bed to use instead of us putting money we don't have into a new one. I ripped up our living room carpet with the help of my daughter last summer after accidentally popping a vein on ,my ankle which bled all over the hall and living room carpet along with a bit on the bedroom carpet too. Since that room is pretty loaded with several dressers and the king-sized bed we had, I wasn't looking forward to moving everything around to access all the carpet for the removal process. Thursday night my daughter helped me slide the king mattress out to the outlawn for pickup in September. I was able to move the springs myself since two, twin sized springs are used for the foundation. I then began to work on removing the carpet from underneath where our bed was and where the new one would go. The larger image on the left shows the bit of floor that was exposed first. It looks great. In the next image, top right it shows the area which was under the bed. I'm sure the black areas are from the padding and it should come off fairly easily once I mop it. The third image is our new bed with a bit of floor showing around it. I figure I'll continue working on taking off the remainder of carpet in the winter months when we're not working on windows, but I may get more done this week since it's raining today and again tomorrow, but first I need to do a bit of cleaning and organizing near my desk/computer area. Saturday am I helped my brother move boxes from my mom's basement into a trailer he'd brought for that purpose. We were going through things to separate for him getting money for a load to the metal scrap yard. He we also divided up things that could be reused at a resale shop, versus things headed for the dump. My family and I had already gone through the house several times in the past several years to make sure we didn't want anything else. While moving things, a pocket dictionary fell out which I decided to keep. It's a Polish/English dictionary. If I don't end up keeping it, I'll give it to one of my siblings. We also found a few old pictures of our kids we'd missed before. I'm working the night shift this week, and the customers we have are only available on Wed and Thurs this week, so maybe I'll be around a little bit for a bit once I do some cleaning. @LadyDuck it looks like my copyright shortcut is working again.

@MarshaMusselman You were really really busy. How is your ankle?

That vein was stitched up about an hour after it blew. The scab took forever, and I mean months to heal completely, but it did heal and that portion of my ankles is much better now. You found a really old post. I'm going to guess it was located on the side bar of one you were reading recently? I have no problem with this getting more interaction or anything, but when I respond on an older one many people never see that I was there. Until reading this post again, I didn't realize it was only one month before I got the current wound on the inside of my ankle this time. At least I know that the same vein wasn't the problem and the causes were completely separate. I've been trying to remember what year we got that bed, so now I know that as well. Thanks for visiting.

@Hannihar I don't normally realize it's an older post until I've read comment by other members. Ok, sounds good.

looks like busy times...the exposed floor does look good . Are you all keeping it carpet free?

Yes I think so, at least for now. We don't have the extra money to buy anything for it. My husband would trip on mats, but I can get one for my side of the bed if I find it necessary. We've had the living room carpet free since last summer and it's warm enough during the winter months.

@responsiveme More people here are reverting back to wood flooring, but most have to install that themselves or have it done professionally. Those that built my house put wood flooring down under all the carpeting, so that's a plus for us other than the fact that it could be refinished, for now it's fine as it is.

@MarshaMusselman here it is usually plain floors....because of the climate. Though in the north west part of the country there are beautifully made carpets. But wall to wall carpeting is not the norm.

Ripping up carpet is really hard work. I hope you get it all figured out really soon. I want to get rid of all my carpenting too but in a Mobile home all that is under that stupid thing is particle board. Dangit all.

Tell me about it @MarshaMusselman carpets are the worst idea anyone ever had especially for those of us with pets. I hope you get your debt down really fast.

@rebelann Carpets aren't good for those with certain allergies either, although a lot of the new flooring probably has plenty of chemicals in them too so maybe that's not much better. Real wood floors, though, should be better than them all I'd think.

Actually, if I wanted to do it right, I should refinish mine as when they put it in they weren't intending it to be the flooring. There are sections that aren't butted up together correctly and the builders put paint cans onto the floor which still has the stains on it in the living room. That is currently underneath the couch. Maybe down the road when we get our debt taken care of it would be something to consider. Otherwise, it's easier to clean even now than the carpet ever was.

Does that mean that you know there isn't any good wood flooring underneath your carpet, Fredo?

The floor looks good under the carpet. You got a lot done in a short amount of time.

I only did the section that would be under the bed. I'll still need to tackle the areas around the bed to the walls and pull out all the tacks. I was going to do that later today or tomorrow, but now I'm working tomorrow afternoon rather than the night shift which I'm happy about although it does eliminate the large chunk of time I thought I'd use to get things done.

@MarshaMusselman That does make it hard to get things accomplished. I'm glad you're happy with the schedule.

How is your bedroom redecorating coming. We are still plugging away in our basement. Well, I am not actually helping that much.

I've not done anything with it since I tore that small section out. I figure I'll have plenty of time this winter when I won't be cleaning windows much to do it then. I do have the newer to us queen sized-bed in the room already and I miss my king bed. My husband takes up most of the space. It's odd because I measured the difference and decided I could handle having a foot cut off from the width, but it seems like more than that is missing now. But this bed will have to do for the next few years.

@paigea Even another two inches would be nice as my husband takes up some of my side when he lays on his back with both arms at his sides. He's more comfy on his side so he's willing to flip over when I come to bed which is much better. Otherwise, I flip one way or the other. The odd thing about the two beds is it surely seems like there was more than just one foot difference. When I returned from surgery I had to move toward the center at least six inches and still never was that close to his arms when he was on his back.

@MarshaMusselman That foot really makes a difference. We have had king sized beds in hotels and they seem like we have so much more room.

A bit done in a little amount of time and now the rest of the carpet will wait until I want to tackle it again. I still have laundry to get done too later today or tomorrow.

I am glad you were able to get all that done and to find the few things that you had missed in your previous runs through the house. Sounds like a lot got accomplished.

I'm done helping my brother, he needs to finish in a few days, but I don't plan on doing anymore there other than maybe taking a few photos. The carpeting I was working on getting out is on hold too. I may work on more tomorrow or possibly not. It all depend on how well I sleep before and after my midnight shift tonight and where I decide to begin. I may just move the bed over and work on the black spots for now.

I figured it would be easier to begin it with no bed taking up that space. I'm not sure how much I'll actually get done before winter, but the new bed will be easier to move around than the king-sized one was. I already started pulling out the floor tacks, but that works best when I'm sitting right on the floor and I didn't want to take the time this weekend to navigate it that way. It may end up being one of those UFO's just not a quilting project, lol.
