My First Pumpkin Pie

I decide one day to make a pumpkin pie for my husband. I was used to the cans of cherries pie filling or apple pie fillings. So I got the crust ready, opened the can of pumpkin and dumped it into the crust. That done I plopped it into the oven. Time was up, I pulled the pie out of the oven and set it to cool. It didn't look bad at all. When we got ready to cut it the knife stood straight up and didn't move. Hmmm what is wrong here. My husband gets the empty can ad starts reading it and he asked me if I added this and this and this. I said no that I did it just like I did cherry or apple pie. This was one stiff pumpkin pie. Oops! I think I did something wrong but sure learned a lesson from it.

We all have to start somewhere, right? The recipe on the can isn't too bad. You might want to give it a try next time you make pumpkin pie. Otherwise, you should be able to find tons of recipes online.

Well, you'd lol at some of the mistakes I made when I was learning about cooking and baking. At least you'll have good stories to laugh about years from now.

Oh I learned real quick to read the cans. I just figured they were like cherry pie filling. Oh how I learned that they weren't.

I'm sure you won't make that mistake again. I make a no-bake pumpkin pie that is delicious. I don't like regular pumpkin pie and decided to give it a try when I saw the recipe for it in a magazine when my kids were little. It's been the Thanksgiving staple every year since. The recipe I took from the magazine is looking battered.

Yes, although canned, some have more you have to do to them. My mom likes the blueberry filling can. Never made pumpkin.

All the other kinds I made didn't have to have extra added to them. So I figured pumpkin was the same.

Oh. I've always made pumpkin pie straight from the pumpkin. Same with other pies like the fruit pies. I'd have done worse than you did. I hope you didn't throw that pie away.

Yes, I threw it away. That was clear back in the early 70's. We both took a bite and had to get rid of it. That was one nasty pie.

@velvet53 You might not like my pies. I use very little milk; mostly pumpkin, spices. These days I sweeten the pie with dates not sugar. We like it but we like pumpkin- sometimes I make pumpkin pie with butternut squash meat.

Yes unfortunately making your Own pumpkin pie even from a can takes a lot more work and preparation in order to Taste good. I have always only bough premade because of this.

Hahaha, pumpkin is a little different from the rest but I know others that have done that as well. I play it safe and just buy the pumpkin pie at the store.

Well we all have times when the cooking decides to do something else by itself...many a time I had to cut up a cake ..soak it in custard ...and call it a pudding.

Yes the cooking does take over at times. Your pudding/cake sounds pretty good. We couldn't even eat the pie. It was nasty.

A South African young wife told me to add in lots of cream. I did that, tasted OK. (The pumpkin pies kept changing in quality. I decided enough is enough and not doing it anymore!)

I think the cream would be too overwhelming for a pumpkin pie.
