How Neat Is This

I love to learn new things, and they don't even have to be useful things, but when they are it love it even more. I was reading an article this morning about how to improve your memory. One of the ways in the article was by employing a Mnemonic. I love mnemonics that help you remember useful stuff. A mnemonic is a little phrase or rhyme that helps you remember some thing. With the aid of a mnemonic you don't have to memorise the thing itself. A common mnemonic is the one used for remembering all the colours in the rainbow. "Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain." In this mnemonic the first letter of each word is the same as the first letter of each colour in the rainbow. "Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet" This little mnemonic helps you to remember the colours and the colour sequence. Today I came across another mnemonic one that is new to me which helps you to remember Pi to 10 decimal places. In my everyday life I have not had to come up with Pi to 10 decimal places. But it is neat that now if I do have to remember Pi I will stand a better chance of being able to do it with this mnemonic. This time the mnemonic works not by using the first letter of each word. This time we are counting the number of letters in each word. May I have a large container of coffee ready for today? May (3) I (1) have (4) a (1) large (5) container (9) of (2) coffee (6) ready (5) for (3) today (5) So, there we have it Pi to 10 decimal places = 3.1415926535. Do you have any interesting mnemonics that you find useful or fun that you can share?

I have, but it is in Italian, it was the way student used to remember the names of the Alps the phrase "Ma Con Gran Pena Le ReCa GiĆ¹" Marittime, Cozie, Graie, Pennine, Lepontine, Retiche, Carniche, Giulie". The phrase means nothing interesting "with great pain he brings them down", but the Initial are the same as the names of the Alps.

That is one that would be of no use to me Anna as I would first have to learn the names of the Alps in order for the mnemonic to remind me what they were lol...

@maggs224 I still remember the names from the times of primary school, the difficult part is to remember exactly their position on the map.

The Great Lakes spell out HOMES (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior) but not in that order. As for the rainbow, I've always relied on my friend Roy G. Biv...

@maggs224 You're welcome. And how about the notes on a musical scale? Every Good Boy Deserves Fun for the lines, and FACE for the spaces.

I can't remember using mnemonics at school for anything though that would have been over 50 years ago and a lot of things back then were learn by rote

I also love to learn new things, when I was a student I used to make code words to remember big theorems and laws

@SHOHANA that's clever, I think that the ones that we make up are easier to remember because they have more meaning to you personally

This is pretty neat and cool. This is a very easy way to remember important values of some constants and other numbers that we use in our field. I will try to apply this to my learning. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. As far as for rainbow colors I always stick to the old mnemonic VIBGYOR- Violet, Indigo, Blue Green, Yellow, Orange, and Red. I will definitely share some mnemonics after making. :)

I think I will stick with mine because I would have a lot of difficulty remembering a nonsense word like VIBGYOR especially as it is not a word that rolls of the tongue easily.

Cool, I will try to memorise that! (A neat trick there!) (I am hopeless in this sort of thing. Memory is something my brain can't digest and refuse to understand! )
