Idle Time

What do you guys do when you have nothing to do in the office? In our company, there is a time where there is no work to do at all. This happens when we finish our proposal projects and just waiting for the result of our bids. What could you advise me to do to make this idle time worthwhile?

Before I retired, it didn't happen often but if there was any free time in my office I did Origami. I bought a book called "Office Origami" that had instructions for making Origami from Post-It notes. It was fun and made the time go by fast.

Wow, so there is a book like this. I will search for this one see for myself. Thanks for this suggestion of yours. For now, I will continue responding to my daily activities here in mylot. At the very least, I am earning some money while having a worth while discussion with you guys. I have been away for 7 years here. It is good to be back.

@deazil I see. But doing the origami to relax myself is a good thing I guess. When stress is too difficult to manage, we need to find something on which we can release the stress. Origami for me will help in this stress release. Also, it relaxes oneself since we divert our mind and focus it on the origami activity. I think I need to buy some origami papers for this activity.

@JasperTore hahaha Origami is my hobby so I have a lot of books on it. I came across the "Office Origami" book and was fascinated.
Yes, it's good to be here and make a little money on the side. The Post-It note Origami won't make you any money unless your coworkers are willing to buy some of it from you. I've been away from mylot for about 4-5 years and I agree - it's good to be back.

Playing in the phone is prohibited in our office. But you can use your phone to check facebook, instagram and other social media sites.

@averygirl72 Reading posts and responding here in mylot is a better idea I guess for me. Atleast I am not using my phone and I am learning a lot from people's posts here.

how many days does "no work/waiting" last?
are you allowed to go use the internet and open sites on your company computer?

It depends. But this happens rarely I guess. It so happen that the industry right now is not doing well so work load is not high. So after my 2 months of non-stop overtime at the office I have this "no work/waiting time" period. This is my 3rd day of doing no work at all. I am allowed to open sites in my computer like what I am doing right now in mylot.

@hereandthere Yes, I am lucky enough to be able to browse the internet during office hours and still get paid while just waiting and not doing any work at all. But during peak time of our work, I rarely use the internet for personal use. I usually use it for research and finding work related resources or materials.
How about your company? Is it strict regarding the internet browsing during office hours?

Yeah same here. I stayed here the whole day and I earned a few cents already. I bet in a few days I can reach a few bucks.
How about in your work? Is there any "no work/waiting time" period?

You could either take the time to relax/rejuvenate yourself or you could work on building some aspect of yourself. If going first the first option, you could just chill and maybe do something you really like to do. If you prefer going for the latter option, then you could work on a skill that you think could benefit your career or life. For example, improving your communication skills, typing, writing, maybe learning a language, reading books/ebooks about stress or time management, maybe you could work on a business that may ultimately make you passive income, etc. :)

Thanks for responding. I like your idea. Both options are good to take. I think I can do both from time to time. Well I have been in a lot of stress due to the proposal projects that we submitted to our clients. So relaxing a bit to rejuvenate myself will really help. With regards to learning a skill, this is a must for me I guess. I need to improve my communication skills, specially the face to face interaction with our vendors and guests. I often talk to the phone so I am confident enough that I have the right skill to this. Writing, I can say that I need a bit of help here since I have some difficulty when composing my email and trying to reach out to the people who I will send the email. For learning a new language, I would love to learn Japanese perhaps. Our company is a Japanese company. There is an opportunity for us to be sent to Japan for an overseas assignment. Being able to speak Nihonggo will be a plus points for me. Reading ebook about stress or time management is a good thing too. It is really difficult to avoid having stress specially when we are busy with our projects. Schedule is too tight that time is a very limited commodity. Being able to improve this will help me a lot in my job.

@InquisitiveMind Thanks for this additional tip! Yeah I should keep things super simple to avoid complications. When things got mixed up, it really made me stressful. With all the pressure of the deadlines, this really add up to the problem. I should not be greedy about the skills. Doing it little by little will slowly but surely help me improve as a whole.

@JasperTore Great to hear that you find benefit from my response. Yeah, totally agreed. :) Work on one thing at a time. A principle I like to follow is KISS - Keep It Super Simple. You'll be able to improve the various things you want to improve on. But till then, work on one thing at a time. Take time out to relax yourself and that will help you deal with the project stress. Besides that, if you spend a little time a day on any of the skills mentioned, you'll slowly but surely improve. All the best!

@weevee18 Nope. We have a very low work load as of the moment. The industry is just recovering so not many projects right now. But soon enough the work will be at peak early next year.

Well we can use the internet for free to do some personal stuff. But there are some limits also. We need some discipline here so as not to abuse the free internet. Extra project is also possible if the schedule allows.

I recommend that you use that time to call a friend or a relative just to check up on them. You can also take photos or admire yourself in the mirror. You can also read the latest magazine and find out what is trending.

Your suggestion is a good one too. I have a constant communication with my friends and relatives thru online so it is easy to check up on them. Regarding taking photos of myself, I am not fond of this. I usually take a look of myself in the mirror whenever I go to the rest room. I read news online to check the situation in our country and I do it on a daily basis usually in the morning before work.
