Make Learning a Way of Life

This is one of the beauties of homeschooling. It is not just about time spent with textbooks and lectures. Everyday is a learning experience. One thing I learned early on was to grab hold of teachable moments. The best lessons are those that just pop up in everyday life. For instance, a couple of years ago, we were on our annual girl's beach trip. My best friend and I, my 3 daughters and my grand daughter always try to go once a year and spend the weekend at the beach. I still homeschool my youngest. My other 3 are grown and gone from the nest. My oldest homeschools her daughter. So when we go on these trips, we look for the typical oceanography and weather lessons that we can teach. One day we all went to the wharf to go shopping. They just so happen to be having one of their weekend celebrations with live, outdoor music, craft attractions, free balloon animals, face painting etc. We came across this one attraction that immediately caught our attention. It was a zoology student with a lemur encounter exhibit. She worked with a local zoo. Of course, we all wanted to hold the cute little lemur, but it turned into a wonderful educational experience. We learned more about lemurs from interacting with them and listening to this zoology student than we ever would have learned from reading a text book. And our kiddos enjoyed it so much more.
