Leonardo da Vinci's two-level bridge

One of Leonardo da Vinci’s innovations was a two-level bridge. He came up with this idea after the plague had killed so many in Italy. He thought that better traffic circulation might improve the health of cities. The idea was that pedestrians would use one level while the other would be used solely by vehicles for transporting such things as goods and waste. The notice said that ‘its ‘triangulation’ structure was highly innovative for the time, with each diagonal crosspiece supporting the next’. Also, ‘the height of the rectangle is equal to the diagonal of the square of the base. This proportion can be found today in the A4 paper format, 21 x 29.7cm.’ Isn’t that something? I’ll never remember these details but I take photos of many of the information sheets then type them up later because I know if I don’t I won’t be able to pass on the information. Now it’s up to you to remember it!

Lots of pretty useless trivia no doubt but hopefully one day some of it might be of use in a quiz somewhere.

Despite having quite a good knowledge of Leonardo da Vinci's inventions, concepts and designs, I had no knowledge of such a bridge format. I was also unaware of this novel fact concerning A4 paper, which is the standard format here in England.

Da Vinci was incredibly inventive. Some designs are a bit way out but he must be given credit for being so far ahead of his time.

@JudyEv Many of his designs were impractical, but he also had a vast amount of workable ones.

I have seen the drawing he made for the city of Milan. If they only would have followed what Leonardo suggested, now they would not have this horrible traffic problem. Geniuses are never listened in Italy, most of them go away.

@JudyEv This is most of the time what happens, they are not listened and then it's too late.

You're right about geniuses never being listened to. They are usually so far ahead of everyone else no-one quite believes them.

That da Vinci was a genius beyond his art.

The emphasis at this place seemed to be on everything bar his art. I guess that's been covered in very many places.

An interesting fact, which has been put to use at least once that I know of, Da Vinci was a man with vision and many different talents.

I can relate with you. I hope I can always have a time to write soon after my trip. The last time I wrote something on my blog, I found out I forgot so many details. Thank God, my boyfriend who travelled with me could still remember other details.

What a neat bridge, somehow it makes sense Leo was the one to think of this, he was a genius.

If they'd have listened to him in his day and age they could have built helicopters @JudyEv I wonder if he ever drew up an engine of any kind, I only remember the schematic I saw of his flying machine, he came up with so many things.

@rebelann He came up with a car of sorts and also ball-bearings. He had some inventions that used hydraulics too.

Thanks, like I'm going to remember that. I will remember seeing this bridge though. It's beautiful! And what a great idea! Just goes to show Leonardo da Vinci was more than a sculptor. I think he put the airplane down on paper too, though nothing came of it for a couple centuries. The bridge is brilliant!

I'm always surprised that there aren't more two level bridges. Think of the traffic congestion they could ease.

That's true. I hadn't thought of that but perhaps they'd be huge congestion at each end.
