Our 7 year old grandson completed kindergarten and grade 1 at a private school in Manhattan. We always knew he was very bright and extremely interested in science, reading, and math. Well, the staff of his school came to an important decision and had his mom called into school last week. (Dad was busy firing someone at his firm's Korean office.)
The school decided it was in our grandson's best interest to skip grade 2 and go directly into grade 3 this year. After much discussion, we all agree.
Since this is a private school, they have clusters and really don't call them grades. They move students around a lot depending on their needs.
Our grandson is ecstatic, since he knows knows and plays with most of these older kids at recess. A bright and fun bunch they are.
When his older sister heard this news, she became a bit disgusted. Mom and Dad decided to tell her that in June, her teachers wanted her to skip grade 4 and go directly to grade 5. They declined. My granddaughter was very pleased to hear that. She wants to remain with her friends.
So everyone is happy. Now we have two grandchildren, one in grade 3 and one in grade 4 at 22 months apart in age.
We are so proud of those two pipsqueaks!

That's great for him, and the family.
I personally probably wouldn't let my kids skip, I think they should go through all the grades and stay with their friends. Even if they know already what's going to be taught and what not.

They are making provisions for my granddaughter, and as I explained, my grandson goes to a private school without "grades" so to speak. All good! Schools and parents have to do what's best for the students. Otherwise, there could be all kinds of issues and problems. I'm happy with both decisions, especially since I was an educator for my entire career.

@kobesbuddy They have been very lucky to be exposed at an early age to books, music, art, live theater, travel, sports, etc, Many children don't have this important exposure.

@DianneN At that age, these kids are just discovering the wide spectrum of opportunities, out there for them! Some children aren't allowed to make those decisions:(
