My First Hurricane

This is my first post as well having just joined on Monday of this week. It was September 12, 1988. I was young then and had my pre-conceived idea of what a hurricane was. It would rain a lot and people would stay home from work and school for a day, but come the next day things would be back to normal. Was I in for a rude awakening, I was not prepared for the devastation that was to follow Hurricane Gilbert. My heart goes out to those who have been affected by Irma and those who are now nervously awaiting 'her' arrival. Please keep safe and look out for your neighbors.

Welcome to MyLot! It seems to be a bad year for hurricanes. They just keep on coming. So much devastation!

Thank you. From all indications, it seems as if hurricanes will be more frequent and fiercer as the years progress.

@Destiny_17 I think so too! Our lifestyle, if continued, will make the weather more and more destructive. We reap what we sow!

@1hopefulman It is so sad that we (humans) are the ones destroying the environment.

Welcome to MyLot.. We have seen so much news about hurricanes lately.. I hope people can get to safer places in time.. We have not many big storms in Sweden, but who knows?? We can pray for those, who experience things like that.

We are in the hurricane season, it ends November. What is happening however, is that they are developing rapidly and that is indeed cause for concern.

Welcome to mylot! I hope you enjoy it here. @Maluse has good advice - Interaction is the key. I'm glad that Irma missed you. Hurricane Gilbert was a horrifying storm. I remember hearing about it while I was at work. I don't live in an area of hurricanes but I have friends that do, in Florida. They've evacuated. I hope they still have homes left when they return. I bet Gilbert gave you a new perspective on hurricanes. Whew. That would be a rude awakening for sure.

Yes @deazil, Gilbert did give me a new perspective on what a hurricane is capable of doing. I don't take them lightly anymore. My brother is in Florida but he says the family is staying put.

@Destiny_17 Yeah, a hurricane will give you a whole new perspective on a lot of things I guess. I really hope your brother is safe. Maybe he isn't near the path of Irma.

Thank You! For now there is no threat of any of the ones formed coming my way. My heart goes out to those who have been affected but I do hope I wont have any to contend with this year.

I really do hope all the people in Florida especially my family who lives there will be OK. I hope it won't damage a lot but who knows. I think it is a mystery to what will happen to them. It's really hard to imagine seen people in general get hurt from hurricanes

I really do hope they will be safe. My brother is there. I asked him if he plans to leave he said no as he believes it will be safe where he is.

We only get the tails of hurricanes in my área, but the wáter that they bring is enough to cause too many problems, especially on the streets. In the past weeks, we had floodings in many áreas of the city
