How Many Posts Do You Reject Before Posting Them On MyLot?

Bright and early and ready to go, I sat down and wrote 4 discussions for MyLot. I left for the garden and never posted them. When I returned, I read them again and deleted them all. I gave each of them a second thought and decided not to post them. I have no reason why I did this. I guess at the time I wrote them they were funny, but after reading them again I didn’t think so. Many days I write so many discussions that nobody will ever read. Why? I don’t know. When I write them, I think the subject is interesting, funny, or of interest. But after writing it, leaving it, and coming back I find it dull, boring, and not so funny. I end up deleting them and moving on. In the end I finally posted a story about breaking my arm. Yes, I know, not so interesting. Yesterday, one of the neighbors that live not far from the garden raises combat cocks. Someone let them out of their cages during the night. My garden was filled with cocks when I arrived. I had so many cocks running around, fighting, and trying to get in the cages of my hens. I thought it was funny at the time, but after writing it I rejected this idea. Do you write discussions that never get posted on the site? Or do you just post all of the discussion that you write?

I've never done that. I don't write very many discussions. The ones I do write are thought through and I'd consider it a waste of time not to post them.

I sort of look at it as a writing exercise for me. I really don't consider it a waste of time. I think about the discussions and what to write. What seems funny now to me, later on won't be funny, so I just scrap them and move on. With my English tutor she use to make me write everything over and over again. I thought it was because my ideas won't any good. I guess that is why I do what I do and delete a lot of stuff I write before I ever post it here on the site.

One or two are fine for me. However, days go by I don't do any. But when I do post I end up writing a lot of ideas and most of them get trashed. I don't know why. I know when I think of it in French there is something lacking for me in English or it is an issue from long ago with my English tutor. She was so hard on me and made me write my papers so many times again. At times I feel I have a hard time expressing myself in English and it isn't as good as it should be. I think maybe more it is me and not my writing.

I normally do not write discussions, which I am not going to post on mylot. I think about the topic and content of a discussion, before writing and posting it, then only I go for it. We do not have combat cocks in our neighborhood, so I just cannot write such discussions.

Sometimes when you tell a story in French it sounds so funny. Now translate it and tell it in English. At times the meaning is lost or it takes on a new meaning. In your case watch a film in your native language. Now watch the same film in English. You will see how much it has changed in the translation. Some things are just easier to translate than others. I guess this is one of my problems and the other was how strict my English tutor was on me. So most of the time I just write and reject my ideas and move on. By the way it was funny to see all the cocks running around my garden. There were so many cocks there. It was also funny to see them running around trying to catch them.

When I get a thread on discussion then I write and post it soon. I don't have the habit of writing and keeping then reading again and deleting. Don't think too much, just write and post it here. Does not matter if it is not interested, the readers will decide whether it is interested or not. Let us give an opportunity to read all of your discussions.

I could do that, but it is not that simple. In French some things are told they are just so funny. When I translate them, I feel they lose their meaning. The same about a story if I told it in English and then tried to translate it I feel it loses meaning in the translation. My friends think it is great I give my dogs commands in English and not in French. When translated to French they don't sound the same and they don't respond. It is like this in all languages. I guess I want them to be as funny in English as they were in French. I can't seem to find the words to express myself at times. Then other times I can express myself and I like what I have done so I post it.

What you wrote makes perfect sense but I'm bothered by this topic and I'll tell you why. I would find a post about cocks in the garden funny and unusual. Can't say I've had the same thing happen to me. It is true we can write boring things but then life if repetive like doing laundry can be boring so... What bothers me is how even for one second this website with its limited membership and therefore limited viewpoints might influence our thinking as to what we can or can not write. Of course you are talking about posting not writing and what might not fly here could fly somewhere else. Like in someone's garden.

@poehere Oh thanks so much for explaining that part about not being influenced. I'm a poor writer. In school I was encouraged to write both drafts and rewrites. Since I'm not a great writer anything that I can manage to put out do consider a great accomplishment so that was where my concern was. Limiting our writing. For me it is the opposite I think. If I shut the door nothing would get written. I would toss everything into the recycle bin and have nothing in the end. So posting a draft, something rough around the edges or even boring I will do. This has its drawbacks of course which I won't mention but the advantage is I'll continue to write. I admire people that can produce their best work but I guess that's not in me maybe.

It isn't people on the site that influence me, it is me that does this. When I first went to the US to go to school in Hawaii I could speak English, but I couldn't read and write the language. I had a really hard time and I wasn't so happy. In California I was put in an ESL class which did help. But the real help was my company hired an English tutor for me. She was so strict that I had to rewrite so many papers time and time again. It made me critical of my own words on paper. I think this is what makes me delete a lot of things I write and not try to write them again. I ask myself if I am expressing myself the way I want others to see it. If I can't answer yes, then I delete it. Yes tons of cocks in a garden was so funny. But I had a hard time explaining this one and for some reason it just didn't come out right. I even had a good title I thought. Then I didn't like it either. Oh well it is me and not anyone here that makes me do this.

This is good. I have no idea why I delete so many of mine. I think it was because of my English tutor. She made me write the same paper over and over again. Now when I read something I write I am not sure if it is good or not. So when I feel like this I delete it and move on.

This is a good way of putting it. I am so critical of myself at times and I don't think some of my stuff is good. I also tell people in French and it is so funny. In English I sometimes lack the words I really want to use. Even with a translator the right words don't seem to fit for me. At times a word I want to use only comes to mind in French. I can't think of what this word should be in English. I have tried to find a good meaning of it with translator, dictionaries and other things. It might be me and the way I feel about what I write in English. I had a very hard English tutor and I was frustrated when I had to write one paper over and over again. I know she wanted it perfect and for some reason I just got frustrated. In the end I did learn a lot from her. I improved my writing skills so much. Now it has been so long and I lost so much. I didn't really write that much in the last 25 years in English. I feel like I lack some skills I was comfortable with in the past.

@just4him OK this one could work. Maybe you being a writer could help me do better. I am always looking for improvement in my English. It was so long I didn't write in English. Then I had to write some books for Data Recovery. I have published 10 books for Data Recovery. This wasn't an issue for me because they are all technical. I can write technical all day long. I can write poetry too. But at times I can't express myself to make it sound the way I want it to sound.

@poehere You were too generous there. Your neighbors must have loved you! Your reply reminded me of how my neighbors (mother, children etc) and my family (2-3 of us) tried to grab a rabbit which strayed from the neighbor's backyard to ours. That cunning rabbit ran around and around, We ended up crawling under the house and sheds, tried to flush the naughty rabbit out. (Some day we were lucky, some day, not! )

I do not write a lot of discussions in Mylot, but when I have an idea to share them with all, I just write it down and let it have an opinion on it here by all. I think you are very perfectionist in your desire to bring the best discussion, but I say if you have something that at that moment you want to share just put it and let it roll here...

It is not being a perfectionist to write the perfect discussion. It is translating what happens and trying to find the right words that would work in English. At times I have issues with this. In French is sounds so funny, but in English it doesn't have the same sound to me.

Do you write discussions in MS Word, etc. and then copy and paste to MyLot? That's actually not a bad idea. A person can spend hours in a certain day coming up with and writing many discussions and then just copy and paste to MyLot each discussion daily without having to spend time writing them. Saves time that way, so it seems anyway. I've had times where I've written a discussion, actually spending a good amount of time on it, and then decided I wasn't a fan of it, or didn't want to post it for some reason, and didn't. That's time wasted.

Hello It often happens that I write something, and later ignore it after reading it again. Maybe I get a better idea when I see it the second time. Our mind unconsciously works all the time. That is a great gift in itself. So, when I write again, it is usually better (at least that is what seems to me).

This is the same way I am. I write it in Word first. Then there is always something coming up for me. I need to work on a computer, a client arrives, or a friend shows up. I forget about what I did. But when I come back I don't like it anymore. So I reject this idea and go on. There is also a language translation problem here too. In French something sounds so funny and everyone is laughing so hard. But in English I don't feel the same reaction when I read it again. So I reject this too.
