MEN!!

I will never understand men. Or rather I will never understand my boyfriend. A while ago I went to cook some TV dinners for us, only to discover that the outside packaging on one was damaged. No matter, as long as the inner packaging doesn't look tampered with. Well I opened the box and the tray the food comes in was crushed on one side and the plastic seal on top was coming off. It looked like someone stepped on it. There was no way I was cooking that. My boyfriend came in, saw it, and said it was fine, he would eat that one. Is he for real? There's all kinds of things you can get from food that looks tampered with. Not even just harm from human tampering, but all kinds of foodborne illnesses or exposure to contaminants in the factory if the food wasn't packaged right to begin with. We don't know what happened between the factory and our freezer. Anyway I didn't listen to his nonsense and threw the messed up one away. And he was upset that I had wasted "perfectly good food"!! I told him that when I'm dead and gone, he can eat all the messed up food his heart desires, but as long as I'm around and feeding him, crap like that is going in the garbage! I swear he will eat anything. He is always eating food with damaged or opened packaging, and he'll eat food that's been sitting out for days. It's a wonder he's never gotten food poisoning! I cringe when I see him eat certain things that I find questionable, but when something is flat out blown open from what looks like someone stomping on it, that's where I draw a line. I would never forgive myself if I fed him something that made him really sick, or worse. And he's not the only man I know who does stuff like this! My dad is almost as bad, my great uncle Bill never owned a refrigerator and so his food was never refrigerated, and one of my brother's friends when he was growing up used to eat anything -- including a URINAL CAKE! And my youngest brother has been known to pack his dinner plate off to the bathroom with him and finish eating while he's on the toilet. Now granted, I used to eat things that were probably non-edible when I was little (including led paint chips off our house once) but I've never eaten food that came in damaged packaging. I was always taught that when in doubt, throw it out! Do you know anyone who insists on eating things that you find questionable?

Men can't think like women. When you are paying attention to the can and if it is in good shape, all he sees is food. hehe

Yep, apparently! He never sees anything wrong with a package that's ripped open, whether the tear is just a slight one or the whole thing is blown up from someone stomping on it. He always claims it's "fine!"

@mildredtabitha At one point he was homeless and didn't have regular access to food, so now he hates to waste anything. I asked him why he thought it was okay to eat something that had such messed up packaging and he explained his thinking...so now I actually feel bad. I hadn't thought about that. You're right, he sees the food as more important than the package.

I am pretty sure many men are like that. I certainly am. I'll eat anything. I must have an iron stomach, because I never get food poisoning from eating questionable food. I figure over the years my stomach has built up a tolerance for stuff like that. I figure it will come in handy for events like the zombie apocalypse, or when Hurricane Irma wipes Florida off the map, and I have to scour through garbage dumpsters to find food to eat! haha

I am pretty sure you are right. I have seen so many men eat questionable things without a second thought, while their wives or girlfriends shriek at them not to eat whatever it is. My boyfriend says that is WHY he never gets food poisoning, and hardly ever gets sick for that matter. He's built up a tolerance to it. And you are certainly right, it will come in handy during the zombie apocalypse, although I hope you won't have to scour through dumpsters for food when Hurricane Irma hits.

@moffittjc I hope it isn't that bad. I remember hearing about Hurricane Andrew on the news when I was younger and seeing the footage from Florida. I think that's the first time I ever heard of a hurricane. Oh dear, government cheese...you might be better off foraging from dumpsters! Haha. (Actually...I liked the government cheese when I was a kid. But I also was eating paint chips off the house back then, so there was no accounting for my taste in anything...)

@Srbageldog I don't think the damage from Hurricane Irma will be as bad this far north in Florida, but in south Florida, if this storm is anything close to what Hurricane Andrew did down there, there won't even be dumpsters left to forage out of. We'll be eating government cheese thrown to us from the back of Army transport trucks! haha

I am with you I will not fix any food that looks bad. It is not worth some one getting food poisoning,

It seems like common sense! If it looks like it's even been remotely questionable, I throw it out. Not worth the risk.

Oh goodness, eating food in damaged packages can be dangerous, your BF should not do this. My husband is even worse than I am, if he suspect something is wrong, he throws.

@Srbageldog The day something will make him sick, he will pay more attention in the future.

@LadyDuck I hope so... Although I also hope nothing ever makes him sick. He also might not see the connection, stubborn as he is.

I think he thinks he's invincible when it comes to eating anything. Because he's never gotten sick...but that doesn't mean he won't ever get sick. He causes me to have panic attacks when he eats questionable things!

@Courtlynn That's usually the response I get when I tell people about him. But he really is an amusing person, even if he is a bit out there. He's never been afraid to do anything, and has no shame apparently.

One of my brothers seemed to eat anything just to frighten my mother.

I think some boys like to live dangerously. One of my brothers was always eating things he shouldn't when he was little, and my mom was always having to call the Poison Control hotline.

We have venison that I have to throw out because I don't like the smell of it. My husband said it is because it is sausage. Nope, that stinking mess is in the trash. I believe it got freezer burnt and that is a horrible taste. Not going to serve that today. Other than that, he is good on tossing crap out. We don't eat anything that looks like it is a damaged or opened package. If it is more than 2 or 3 days out after cooking and refrigerated, I toss it out. I had a client that was insisting I use a jar of mayo that was outdated by a year. I opened it for her to look at the contents. It was thick like the top of cooked pudding that had a layer of skin on it. She put her finger in it and tasted it. I gagged and told her to spit it out before she got sick. Asked her if she would like diarrhea for a month and she then told me to throw it out.

I think some people have a harder time wasting food than others, even if there is something "off" about it. I would throw the venison out too. My boyfriend once was going to eat some tamales that had been in the fridge for over a week (it may have been two weeks; I can't remember. I wanted to throw them out but he kept saying they were still good and he would eat them.) I was glad he realized they were covered with mold and threw them out himself. I probably should have just tossed them when he wasn't looking, but sometimes it's better for him to discover that food doesn't stay good indefinitely. Your client sticking her finger in the spoiled mayo and tasting it actually reminds me of something my mom would do. Yuck! At least the idea of diarrhea for a month was enough to convince her to throw it out!
