Here is a brief history of the chocolate chip cookie; that warm, soft, sweet and chewy comfort food. The ultimate in unique desserts which found a place into America's kitchens. The cookie will turn 79 this year, a success story which started in Whitman, Massachusetts in 1938.
Ruth Whitman, the owner of the Toll House Resturarant added cut up bits of chocolate to her cookies to complement her ice cream. One year later she sold the rights to her recipe and Toll House name to the Nestle' company for $1.
Two events according to Wikipedia cemented the chocolate chip cookie's reputation into the American mainstream. The opening of the Toll House Restuarant during the Great Depression of the 1930's, and America's entrance into WW II.
Thanks to Mrs. Whitman and her husband perservering through those hard times, they evenutually found success in their restuarant business, and introduced the chocolate chip cookie. And, by the time the United States sent soldiers to Europe, the cookie was wildly popular and a great item to send to those fighting men overseas.
Now, it's time for some discussion to these questions? What is your favorite brand of chocolate chip cookie? Do you like chocolate chips in your ice cream? And do Mothers still ship chocolate chip cookies to their sons and daughters in college? I'm also wondering if their are any other cookie types as popular as the chocolate chip cookie in other countries? Inquiring minds want to know?

@dgobucks226 Now the cookie dough is a different story for me. My mom hardly baked, but I have ingrained in my head that we shouldn't eat raw batter/dough because it will make our tummies sick. I have told that to my kids and they know that . . . but they still love the cookie dough flavored stuff .

@dgobucks226 Most people are, it seems. Even the stores seem to have as many brands of oatmeal raisin varieties as they have chocolate chip. Though I love both home baked.

Thank you so much for your response! I thought it was interesting how they became so popular. Chocolate chip cookies are so good I think I might be addicted to them. I like Famous Amos too although homemade are the best!

I like homemad chocolate chip cookies. Big and soft. My sons prefer Chips Ahoy.
I do NOT like chocolate chips in my ice cream. Chocolate syrup maybe.
And my kids are 7 and 3. I won't be shipping cookies to college for a while.

Another vote for homemade, and why not there the best! I like Keebler cookies or Pepperidge Farm if I buy them from the store. The Shoprite I go to also has a bakery which makes homemade and their not bad. I see from your children's ages you have plenty of time to perfect your home made cookies!

Some might still get cookies from home while they are away at school, and many no doubt still enjoy these too!

I am sure bakery cookies would be good Hanni. From my experience, you can always find ones you will like. I also prefer baking my own. Nothing like a homemade chocolate chip cookie from the oven , yummy!
