Fear of returning to work

I had became a stay at home mom for the past 10 years. In the past, I was working in a computer shop as a sales assistant where I push products and entertained customers computer woes, more alike a computer consultant. However, I quit my job after I gave birth to my son whom my mother-in-law refused to care for. After 10 years, my son is a school age kid, my hubby thinks that it is wise for me to return to work, other nature of job in order for me to adjust myself into the society. He said that I am outdated even though I had been blogging and earning online for the past 9 years. I had been "talking" to virtual friends not the real people that give criticism . I have the fear of returning to work, the fear of being scolded by customers or boss, making repeated mistakes and travelling by bus which I had not done for the past 20 years! Do you have the fear of doing something that you had not done for the past 10 or more years? How do you encounter the obstacles?

I take a deep breath and go in with my head high and get the job done, whether I know what I am doing or not, I can always learn. I have always done as I was taught smile and remember the customer is always right, whether they are mean or not.

I stopped working couple of years ago, but I have no desire to take up a job with headaches. That means I can be satisfied with limited income. Yes, I have no inclination to get back to the rat race - siva

Thank you, so you think that I should try my luck on working after 10 years of stay at home mom?

I quit work in 2005, to help care for my ailing parents, who were still living in their own home. After both of them passed away, I tried to return to the work force and failed, miserably! Those verbal attacks made it impossible, for me to adjust to it.

@peachpurple Oh, I know that is true! It was impossible to please some workers, who were always against any newbies.

thank you for your input. I know that the younger generation are bullying the older or middle age new employees. Those verbal attacks are horrible indeed, plus the back stabbers

I can tell you I am pretty afraid of having a boss again. I've been bullied badly several times, including my last office job. I think a lot of my health problems are due to this bullying. I don't want to be an employee again due to this fear of being bullied. How to overcome it,I don't know. I'm currently waiting on various hospital appointments, so I can't work at the moment in a 9-5 sense anyway. The future - I really don't know.

i am sorry to hear about the office bully you had to encounter. Did you made a complaint to the workers board?

@peachpurple I tried to report it to my line manager, who would not take my calls. She was always 'out of office' or 'on holiday' etc. I know she left not long after me, so I don't think she could be bothered anymore with the job.

I would think it is normal to have some fear about doing something one hasn't done in that long a time. However, if there is a need to go back to work, what choice do you have? Put on you courage hat and maybe it won't be a bad as you think it is. Who knows, you even might find it exciting? Think positive!

It is difficult going back to work after a long time away. The first day or two will be the worst.

Try really looking around. Perhaps find a job where you don't have to work with customers too often. And also if you find a job and you don't like it, keep looking for another job until you find one you prefer. I can understand that you are scared after being out of work for so long. Are there jobs closer to you, that you could consider, so you wont be on the bus for so long or you could walk. You can type, perhaps find a data entry job, or are there courses you could take to update your skills. Just because you have to find a job, doesn't mean you have to settle for just anything. Working with the public is very demanding. Also is it possible you could start part-time and then when you feel comfortable try full-time.
