This was from 1989 and it starred Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan. You guessed it When Harry Met Sally. This movie appeared in the time frame with all the Meg Ryan romantic comedies and this movie did not disappoint. There were many memorable scenes but the key thought process here was the age old question....Can men and women be friends?
Interesting fact: The original screenplay was written they would breakup as the writer thought that it would be more realistic; however, during the process, the script was revised to show how the characters could maintain a friendship throughout the years. As a result, Billy Crystal ended up having to adlib through the picture and that is how this movie quote came up.
Let's evaluate this. What do you think, can men and women be just friends? My opinion is that it is possible but it may not go without the difficulties. Even if you are not physically attracted to the other person, an emotional attachment can happen. So, like brother and sister, maybe but, I would venture a guess that scenario is not the norm. What happens if each party develops dating relationships with someone else, how does this affect each one. Will the new person in the mix accept this friendship? This could go many ways.
As for the quote, I agree with that. If you have found someone that you love and want to spend the rest of your life with, waiting is hard. We are living in a microwave generation and relationships are no different. We can't always get what we want and some things are worth waiting for. There may be good reasons to wait, such as children, ex's, living arrangements, etc... So, my final take on the quote is, don't necessarily rush into a relationship. Decide what is best for you.

My best friend in the whole wide world is a girl I used to date. We have been able to maintain our close friendship for decades. We have this thing where we must meet the person whom each of us is dating, and then give our honest opinion. If she says she doesn't like a girl I'm dating, then I take that very seriously. And vise versa. Everybody says we should be married to each other, but we are doing just fine as best friends. No need to complicate it any more than that! It may not work for everyone, but it works for us!
