Difficult to understand old folks

After my mother in law had been staying with us for the past 20 years, she hasn't changed a bit even though she had moved out, to stay with one of her bachelor son. She is still stubborn! She is in her late 80s, she prefers to listen to sweet talk rather than listening to the ugly truth. If I were to tell her not to do "this" because it will hurt her limbs or deteriorate her health, she will boycott and reveal her discontentment. So, I am the "bad guy". Instead, her precious daughter would support her to do "this" in order to gain her support even though her daughter knew all along that it will bring more harm instead of saving her. So, her daughter is the "Good guy". Why do old folks prefer to listen to sweet talk that would harm them ? I really don't understand them.... Do you have problems with understand old folks?

I have experienced that with my granny and in their age they just want happy moments, a calm environment and a good rest. She is not a special case they are many like her.We are the ones who should readjust and know how to cope with them.

@peachpurple find a nice way of doing it,,,,women are good at it.we know how to be manipulative.I can want to warn you against something and i will do it in a good way that you will have to comply. Its all about learning someone and their nature

Sometimes plenty of patience is required to deal with the elderly... They say we go back to become childlike again when we are old...

Well, it's not only the old folks, because I know plenty of young people who prefer the same. They do not want to know the truth, they want someone who tell them only what they want to hear.

Sounds like typical Asian mother in law woes. Well I feel once people cross 70, they turn into kids. They only like what they want to like and only listen what they want to listen. Patience is the key. If you have a kid you'll understand quite easily I think.

That is not anything unique. Most old people are set in their ways and do not want to be contradicted.
