DIY Voltron birthday party

I traditionally let the kids pick what themes they want for their birthday parties, and they usually end up choosing themes that have no mass produced plates or decorations... so I have to figure out how to pull it off with just my own creativity! Pinterest is a great resource for me in times like this, but sometimes I'm still stumped.
My stepdaughter requested a Voltron themed party. Voltron was an animated TV show when I was a kid, but I never actually saw it myself. Recently Netflix started airing a new Voltron series, but I haven't seen that one either! Wouldn't you know it, there's no Voltron themed birthday merchandise. Well, there's a little bit out there... but it's vintage party supplies from the 1980s and very expensive.
What little I knew of the show told me that 5 people in armor joined together to form a huge mechabot, and that each person wears a different color... so I based the party around those colors. I bought solid colored plates, napkins, flatware, etc in the appropriate colors at the dollar store and found appropriate colored streamers in my stash. We also bought mylar balloons in the appropriate colors from Dollar Tree.
I made a big pan of brownies and cut it up into the general shape of the big mech, and then I iced the pieces in the appropriate colors (I have a stash of gel food colors too). The birthday girl was thrilled, and I was very relieved that I was able to pull it off!

@spiderdust What a shame, leftovers of the cakes are always appreciated.

It was. Sadly there were no leftovers for us as the birthday girl took the rest of her cake home with her

Thanks! I did print out a couple of images to decorate the door and for one cupcake (for a gluten-free child).

@thislittlepennyearns I did. I keep a few gluten free cupcakes in the freezer and pull them out and frost as needed.

That is one impressive looking cake. I won't eat that cake and instead keep it!

Thanks! I wasn't sure that I'd be able to manage the cake, but once I stopped worrying about it being perfect and just went with the simplified design, it fell together.

Thanks! We've got another child's birthday coming up at the end of the month, so I'm trying to come up with ideas for that one now.

Thank you! I don't think I'm winning any cake decorating awards lately, but she still loved it.
