Sphinx and Great Pyramid

Not far from the Nile River, across from Cairo, sit two of Egypt's great treasures, the Sphinx and the Great Pyramids, three in number. These great sights are located in the eastern Sahara Desert, which is very sandy and dry.
At tourist sights like this, there are always souvenir hawkers, trying to sell anything from T-shirts and caps to camel rides.
Though I did not see any signs of danger, we did have an armed escort on our tour bus. We don't use 'escorts' on our US highways, unless we count the usual law officers, our highway death rate in the US is still about 40,000 per year, with hardly ever any terrorist deaths in Egypt.
