Happy Autumn

The weather is finally cooler here, although it still gets a little bit on the hot side in the middle of the day. Still, my t-shirts are now swapped out for sweatshirts or layered with a cardigan. Toddler boy still needed some cool weather clothes and there was money available in the checking account today, so we stopped by Savers to see what might fit him (as well as to browse through their Halloween costumes). We found 4 pairs of pants for him, (1 pair of corduroys, a red fleece pair, and 2 pairs of "running pants") plus a Peanuts Great Pumpkin t-shirt that will fit me, all for under $20.
We've been badly needing to restock on green vegetables but had been waiting for today's payday. We picked up 3 tubs of spinach (one was a spinach/baby kale/chard/mizuna mix), some lettuce, a bag of grapes, a flat of canned green beans (these are our emergency backup vegetables, and we had none left at all!), several packages of frozen green beans and broccoli, plus some frozen vegetable and bean mixtures that looked like might be good foundations for meals.
I made two different kinds of stew for dinner -- pork and butternut squash with greens, and beef with carrots/potatoes/celery/green beans -- so both the adventurous eaters and picky eaters would be happy. We had this with sourdough bread and butter.
The picture above is a lot like how I remember the lane to my childhood home in the autumn. We lived around a lot of oak and maple trees, and the colors were more vibrant than they get here. I miss it.

@spiderdust The past month of August was so hot that I avoided anything that needed to be cooked for more than 20 minutes.

After avoiding any dishes that required turning on the stove for most of the summer, it's nice to make those warm simmering meals again.

@LadyDuck I was buying 1 or 2 rotisserie chickens from Costco once a week and making a lot of our meals out of that meat. Their $5 roast chickens have been that price for ages and are the cheapest in town; they are loss leaders to entice people to come into the store and buy more things. Cold chicken and steamed green beans or salad made up quite a few dinners.

I really love your photo of the orange trees. What an amazing autumn time. Wow! a couple of years ago we took a plane from Bristol in England to Kaunas in Lithuania. The plane had a silhouette shape on the autumn landscape. It was lovely with al the yellow, brown and orange leaves.

I didn't take the photo, but that's exactly what our lane looked like when I walked to my school bus as a child.

It's still so green and brown here right now. I think I'll have to drive somewhere to see those pretty autumn colors.

I wonder what happened to my photo? :(
My whole house smells like pears right now. I've got all the trays in the dehydrator running.

It worked out really well. Maybe I'll try making two stews another time, especially when I want curry. There are two people in the family who can't stand curries at all, and they're really warm and comforting for me.
