What good does it get?

My grandson, age 9, has a good voice. He usually sings when nobody is around. He doesn't want anybody in the house to hear his voice. At age 1, I usually hear him hum and keeps quiet when around people. I try to encourage him to sing. But he always say I am shy, but he always ask when he see some singing contest. I am trying to motivate him.
