Not happy with dishwasher after first use

I am tired of standing there every day washing dishes, so yesterday, for the first time since moving into my house, I decided it was time to load up the dishwasher. I wasn't sure if it still worked but gave it a try. I didn't have any dishwashing detergent so I went to the store and bought some. Had to go to more than a few stores before I actually found what I was looking for. When I got home, I loaded everything into the dishwasher, happily turned it on, and went to enjoy my dinner. After the cycle ended, I opened up the machine, and saw water on top of the tea cups with black stuff floating on top of it. That was disgusting. The cups had to be rewashed. And so did the rest of the stuff in there, even though there was no floating black stuff, stains or water on anything else. I heard that this can happen when a dishwasher hasn't been used for a long time, but that didn't make me feel any better as I have to rewash everything by hand. I was planning to do that today. Unfortunately, that never happened. A guy came over to look at the leak in the kitchen ceiling and see what's causing it, which I actually discovered during the dishwasher cycle last night. I thought that turning on the dishwasher had somehow caused the leak in the kitchen ceiling, but it made no sense because the water was leaking in the ceiling up above, not down below on the first floor. We went to the bathroom upstairs, which is above the kitchen, and saw water dripping from the faucet in the bathtub. After he turned on the hot water, we saw brown water coming out of the faucet, along with stuff that resembles sand, except it's not. (Not sure what it's called.) The cold water was better but still not clean. Due to this problem, the water cannot be used and the dishes remain there, waiting to be washed again. When the water finally returns back to normal, which I hope is tomorrow at the latest, I will finally rewash the dishes. And I think I will go back to my usual hand washing dishes routine. I am not sure I want to wash dishes in the dishwasher ever again after what happened.

Glad you found where the actual problem is. I always do dishes with hands.

@prashu228 It would be crazy not to use it, especially if it works. Funny thing is, some people actually wash the dishes before they put them into the dishwasher to wash. And by wash I mean with soap, sponge and water. SMH.

So do I. But washing dishes every day, and lots of them, can become both tiring and annoying. And it's crazy to always hand wash dishes if I have a dishwasher. Just have to figure out what to do so there is no more of that black stuff floating around in my cups, etc. after the wash.

I hope it is just the water and not the dishwasher. Maybe the water will get to normal color again.

The water in the faucet is no longer brown. But there was black stuff floating around on top of the cups and other things after the wash. Perhaps that's due to the fact that the dishwasher hasn't been used in years. Will have to try to run the machine without the dishes and see what happens.

@lovebuglena yes. Perhaps it was the cause.

The more it is used the better it may perform in future. Just give it a try, if it doesn't work perhaps there is a problem with the dishwasher.

@Freelanzer I definitely want to be able to use the dishwasher. Will run it by itself and see what happens. Then will try to load some dishes and run it again. I hope the dishwasher did not cause brown water to come from the faucets.
