This New Doctor Wants to Do an MRI of My Brain

United States

Yesterday I saw my neurologist's P.A., since he's booked until the next year. (I don't have my next appointment with him until December, and that was scheduled over a month ago.) Anyway she was very nice, although difficult to understand due to her accent. She did her own physical examination and even examined my eyes since my neurologist had made a note that I had experienced a traumatic brain injury at some point and my pupils are different sizes, likely as a result. Anyway she confirmed that there is evidence that I have an old brain injury. She wants to send me for an MRI of my brain to check it for lesions. I have never had an MRI scan of my brain before. Hopefully my insurance will authorize it. I would like to know what's going on in there. The right side of my body, which is the side that always goes numb during my migraines and is the side that went numb when I thought I was having a ministroke in my 20s, is weaker than the left side. I don't have the same sense of feeling in the right side as the left, and when she hit my knee to test my reflexes, it barely moved (after a number of whacks, because it just wasn't moving at all.) It's also my right pupil which is always smaller than the other. I don't know what that all means, but I'm guessing whatever happened when I was younger, must have done damage to the part of my brain that controls the right side of my body. It's interesting how old injuries from your youth come back to haunt you later on in life. I've seen many doctors over the years, and no one ever suggested I had a brain injury. But it makes sense why I am the way I am.

You are so right, the old injuries haunt you later in your life. A MRI should be the best for you, I hope your insurance will pay for it.

@Srbageldog Possibly nobody caught it because they did not look into the problem. We also had no CT scan and MRI 24 years ago.

@LadyDuck True. But I've been going to doctors because of my migraines for decades; it's interesting none of them ever ordered a scan of my brain until now. And I was only ever sent to a neurologist once as a teenager to have him look into it, and he just stuck me on the anticonvulsant meds, which turned me into a zombie.

I hope so too. I had a CT scan of my brain a year ago and there was no evidence of anything wrong, but that wouldn't show things like lesions. Hopefully there aren't any but it would be good to know what exactly is going on in there. Crazy how something that happened 24 years ago could be still affecting me today! Crazier still that nobody caught it until now.

Thank you. Hopefully there aren't any lesions, as I don't know what that would mean for me.

I am so sorry to hear about your past injury that haunts you this time. It will be better to undergo MRI to get the exact cause of your physical changes. There could be better diagnosis after having it and proper medicine to prescribe. I hope everything will be fine on you after the MRI.

I believe that one of my friends had an injury when he was still a toddler. One time he had an accident, a motor accident. Then the Doctor found out that he still had a head injury. They did an MRI and found there is a blood clot. So they needed to undergo a major operation.

That is scary! Good thing they caught it. Is your friend okay now?

@Srbageldog That is the reason why he will pass out every time he has a headache. Yes, he is okay now. Under observation.

@JustBhem That is good he's under observation. I hope he will be okay. I have had a CT scan of my brain before, so I know there are no blood clots, thankfully (at least there weren't any a year ago.) I am grateful I have never passed out from a headache.

Thank you. I hate having MRIs, but I also want to know what's going on inside my head. Everything is starting to make sense now at least.
