Homemade Cat Food, Hope She will Eat it.

My old cat is getting a bit fussy with her eating habits. She will eat a few morsels of dry cat food, but not enough to say so. Yesterday I picked up a marked down package of ground turkey. It is slowly cooking in a cast iron skillet. To that I added a handful of oatmeal, water, and olive oil. I want to add some mashed carrots to it as well, but not sure she will enjoy it. Waiting now for it to cook down and then cool so I can serve her a portion. The protein will be great for her. She is getting so skinny. Hoping to keep her happy through the fall. Have you ever made homemade pet food or treats for your pets?

That is so sweet you are making her food from scratch. My cat is being a brat and puking around the house to punish us for not letting her sleep in my daughters bed anymore. If your cat is old it might hurt her to chew dry cat food maybe wet it first and let it sit a few minutes to see if she will eat it better then.

She is so finiky. I doubt she would eat it if it were wet.

She enjoyed the first serving of it. The rest is in a quart sized bag in the fridge. When I give her the next portion I will warm it in the microwave for her.

@just4him there is enough for her to have several meals. I just need to add water to it when I put it in the microwave. The oatmeal absorbed most of the moisture from the meat.

@ElusiveButterfly I'm glad she liked it. Good idea storing it in the fridge for later.

When I had a cats, I always bought their food and they always liked it. Sometimes I would just open a can of tuna and they liked that too. I hope your cat likes what you cooked.

I remember I did when I went vacationing at my granny house, she had two cats and a dog. We cooked chicken wings, liver, boiled in a broth made with the carcass and both the cats and the dog liked.

Can't remember if I've ever given her chicken livers. I have tried other organ meats and I don't remember her eating them.

@LadyDuck I have the gizzard and heart leftover from yesterday when I boiled the organ meats from a chicken. I am going to add it to her meal today and see if she will eat them.

I know people that chop up fresh vegetables such as broccoli, carrots, and celery and serve it to their dogs like a salad.

@Srbageldog my sister makes her dogs a "bonus" which is a chew bone that she fillse with carrot slices and they will work the carrots out. They love them. I am surprised when I see dogs eating chopped broccoli and other veggies.

@ElusiveButterfly And the dogs actually eat it that way? My parents' dogs would just stare at you like, "what, are you trying to poison me??"

That's a great idea. No I haven't made any for my cat cutie. She likes to eat fresh meat - yesterday she had a pork steak. My cat is chubby.

In the past when we had cats, besides the cat food that we bought from the store, we still made them cat food by ourselves. My mom would buy fish from the market and then cooked them for our cats. When it was the time for the meal, she would mix this home made cat food with rice and our cats even liked it more than the cat food from the pet store.

I did. It consisted of ground whole chicken with liver, a little salt, and sautéed garlic. They loved it at first. But I have to change the recipe as time goes by.

@ElusiveButterfly I always thought that but the websites I have read say that cats do not have the liver enzymes to process garlic or onion and we should not give it to them.

The time of caring for an elderly cat is so hard. I remember those days too well. Yes, I have been there, trying to please the old dear, beloved, knowing I would not win and yet I had to give it a go. Take care.

She doesn't like being indoors. With cold weather coming I don't want her to suffer. I am keeping her happy as long as I can.

Yes, my grandma's dog was very tiny and his teeth weren't very good. She would brown Pepper some hamburger and then let it cool a little bit. He was much healthier, eating meat instead of dog food.

She enjoyed the meal and even had some leftover fish last night. She prefers table food over store bought. Won't even eat canned cat food.

@ElusiveButterfly Wow, she knows what she likes. I feed my cat only wet food on Friday and Saturday and will do on our holiday starting Wednesday night and she also gets dry food and only that during the week. I used to have a habit of overfeeding my animals so I hope Sophie will be ok.

Yes, I used roasted or boiled chicken, usually quarters as they are cheapest. I cooked them long and slow as I felt my two kitties needed all the nutrition in the skin and bones too. I would bone the meat, add oatmeal and I would put butternut squash or pumpkin puree in it as they started begging for butternut when I was making soup for hubby and me. I felt like it extended their life and made them healthier in their rougher days. They had gum disease and would get infections and lose teeth. It got worse on canned cat food. My vet also said a little homemade yogurt was good for them when I told her I was feeding that to them.

I had cats that loved pumpkin. Whenever I was making pumpkin pie or bread they would wait for a dollop of the pumpkin. When I cleaned out a pumpkin they were right there begging for some of the filament.
