Sometimes last minute plans work best.

A couple of weeks ago I decided to have a party. Over the summer, both girls had had a bunch of their friends round for their respective birthday parties, and I was starting to feel that I was missing out to my children (I suspect this is a common experience!) I decided to do something for myself, but when I looked at the calendar I realised that the upcoming weekend was the only possibility since there were other family events coming up that might require our attendance. So I contacted a few friends who we regularly get together with and invited them over for a ‘back-to-school barbecue’. A couple of them were available, but a couple of others replied saying they were away. So then I thought again of the people who we hadn’t seen for a while and invited some of them. There was very little response, so then my partner suggested other friends from a bit further afield, but again, little response. It was looking as if it might be quite a select get-together. Then, on the Friday, several people who had presumably been thinking about it or waiting for a chance to talk to their families about weekend plans, suddenly decided they would love to come! A quiet meal for 5 or 6 friends turned into a gathering of 30 – we had to look for extra plates! It all turned out to be a great success and was lovely to catch up with some people I hadn’t seen in ages. It was just a shame that most of them left before 9pm, many having youngish children, so I didn’t get enough time to talk to everyone as much as I would have liked. Now though I am inspired to do it again before too long! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2017.

Thirty people it's a big party. Did you made an outdoor barbecue? We had bad weather yesterday.

I planned several dishes to cook indoors as well, just in case - soup, baked potatoes, pulled pork, and lots of salads, so still 'barbecue-style' food but without having to cook it all on the barbecue just in case. As it turned out though the rain stopped and the barbecue went well.

Back when I was in college I love hosting parties but whenever I planned to, it just didn't work out so well or didn't push through. We realized that list minute planning worked even better. From then on, we have parties at the spur of the moment!

If I had had a lot of time to think about it, maybe I wouldn't have done it, but it was all fine!
