Sorry - not sorry for holding up the line at Walmart!

This afternoon, my fiancé & I went to Walmart to pick up some essentials (mouthwash, toothpaste, bottled water, juice). Then, I browsed the toy aisle quickly just to see what's going to be trending for the holidays to prepare myself. I decided to look at the Lego's aisle specifically. I saw this nifty car kit for $1. Looked to good to be true considering the ones right beside it is almost $5 and it's the legit Lego's one, not a knock of brand! I scanned it and it wasn't ringing up $1. I went to go check the barcode on the shelf, it matched so I took a photo and asked the cashier. The cashier verified and said yes so she had to wait for a manager to override it! Then, I had a bunch of gift cards I accumulated from myPoints to use at Walmart. The cashier had to call over the manager again because she didn't know how to process e-gift cards. Sorry, not sorry to the people behind me who were grunting and groaning. Do you ever feel guilty for holding up the line sometimes?

I always feel guilty to hold people in line. I usually ask the cashier to go on with the others until I discuss with the manager.

She was not done ringing me up, but while in the meantime she rung the rest of my stuff and had the light flashing. The manager came by but it didn't really take too long but given the amount of items I bought (like 10), it should have been faster, but the time was like maybe I bought 30 items, if that makes sense.

@LadyDuck Yes, I wait for others too. Not a big deal, but its not different than if someone had more items checking out. What bugs me is if someone holds the entire line up because they forgot their bag/wallet in the car. Or, their kid/spouse/whoever is still shopping yet the person checked out and waiting.

@infatuatedbby If it's something that can be solved with not a big delay I do not feel guilty. Often I wait for the others.

@andriaperry We have a local grocery store called "Tops" and if they get a few people in line they'll call some one up to help. They are pretty good about that thank God!

It depends. Last time I went in a shop, I have not been lucky : the cashier was apparently a fresh new employee and was calling somebody to help for quite any customer. I thought several times to move in another line, but finally I waited. I crossed my fingers when my turn came, but I got the same treatment than others, and she had to call another cashier to understand how to register something.

Oh yes, sometimes relatively new cashiers can take a little longer than expected. I get those sometimes too. But this time as because of me. I had e-gift cards that the cashier didn't know how to process (though if she was trained fully she could have known, but now she knows) and I had a price error not on my behalf but the store so it took a little longer.

I'm very sensitive with the people I disturb around me and as much as possible I didn't want to be a burden to anybody.

It was more like I had 30 items rung up of a wait, but I had less than 15 minutes. Not too long but also not my fault - the store didn't price mark properly and the cashier didn't know how to process a e-giftcard

After I got in the car, I was like darn - for the effort, I should have gotten the other 2 left on the shelf. The car can be made 3 different designs, only practical to get them all. All well. Thanks! I ended up having enough to cover the entire shopping errand cart and paid like $1.08 pocket money (essentially just for the toy) after all the e-gift cards I got from myPoints.

I don't ever feel guilty for holding up others at a register. If you are shopping and paying for an item and need a price verified to save a buck or fifty cents then so be it. Others I am sure would do the same if it were them. The cashier sometimes gets flustered and I tell them not to sweat it. I was the learning curve they needed to have eventually and they should be glad it was me instead of some other patron who would make a huge scene over it.

@infatuatedbby yes, when someone leaves their spot in line to go back and get something and asks you if you would mind watching their cart. Um what? How about letting me go in front of you and if you are back before I am done all is good.

I only get annoyed when someone is holding up the line because they forgot their wallet/bag and instead of helping the next person(s) in line, they tell the cashier be right back. Or another incident, I get annoyed is when they are buying things but their spouse/significant other/child/whoever isn't back from grabbing some last minute items. But yes, you're right. This opportunity gives it a learning experience for the cashier so that she/he can be familiar with other transactions that may come up!

NEVER! $1.00 for Lego - I'd be all over it. Even if the set isn't appealing, you can always use the pieces for something else

Seriously, for a dollar? Legos are not cheap - that's a good deal! I have felt guilty but in this case it's not your fault at all . . . the cashier is the one who had to verify stuff.

@infatuatedbby A lot of times I will go scan the prices myself before checking out . . . sometimes the product or prices aren't in the right place. They've had holiday stuff on clearance, but some things were cross over items so apparently they wouldn't count as clearance . . . still they were put in the clearance section. I hate the lines at Walmart - so I do whatever I can to get me out of there asap .

@much2say Yes I never trust prices. I will always scan, sometimes the price will end up being even cheaper. :) Same with shopping at Macy's ! Scanning is totally key.

Totally! Well technically the person who priced it didn't do a good job because it didn't scan as $1!

You had to buy some packages of that cheap good lego, tell the cashier it is supposed to cost 1$ because that's what the price that is shown. I think they have to sell it with the price shown even if it's lower from the real price. The ones who arrange the shelves have to update the prices so to prevent customers manipulation. You could buy and stand on your own right to pay only 1 dollar but you decided to check out the price, letting them to correct the price. In my oppinion, they coule even sell it cheaper because they would still earn for it... Next time you see such a good opportunity, stand on your own to buy for that cheap price even if you know they forgot to make it higher. In the worst case, you can tell them that you will not buy it and blame them for manipulating the customer, making them believing the price was cheap. One could buy 10 packages thinking it would cost 10 dollars, he may not notice the real price and lose a lot of money he wouldn't spend in first place if he knew the real price. Then s/he comes home and see how much money they charged for the package. They can't do such a thing, it will hurt their reliability, get serius complaints.

Yes, they honored the price of $1 because it didn't ring up the dollar. We don't have that problem with honoring the price as it is their fault. However, the cashier has to call over the manager to approve of the override and that holds up the line slightly. The people behind get annoyed but it wasn't my fault the price was not marked properly.

@infatuatedbby Aww, I thought you had warned the cashier about the price. Sometimes, it is better to choose an experienced cashier if you pay with less common currency like gift cards. Specially if the queue is long and many customers may get holded.

It is what it is, if the line gets held up because a price isn't right to darn bad. If it was the grumbling customers who had a wrong price they would want it checked.

Hahah exactly, had the store get it right (then I wouldn't have a problem) and if the cashier knew how to process the e-gift card.. again not a problem for me! The e-gift card can be used at self check out but since I had a price error, I waited in line instead.

Yep, this time the cashier learned two things. Approval for override and how to use e-gift cards at the cash register. At check out I can use the e-gift cards no problem but since I needed to price match the tag in store, I went to the line.

Glad you checked out smoothly. It didn't take as long as one should dread. Just took a little longer, but no difference had I had like 30 items to check out, but just had less than 15 items , if that made any sense.
