Favorite Industrial Songs #7 - "Down in It"

As Freddie Mercury once sang, the show must go on, and indeed, it must. We are at #7 in my Favorite Industrial Songs series: "Down in It" by Nine Inch Nails. "Down in It" was the introduction of Nine Inch Nails to the public at large, released as a single in 1989, as a precursor to their debut album, Pretty Hate Machine (which contains the song.) Thanks to alternative radio, and a video that made the rotation on MTV's 120 Minutes, the song was a hit with the American alternative music crowd, reaching #16 on Billboard's Alternative Songs chart (it charted nowhere else, but actually placed higher on that chart than it's massively popular followup, "Head Like a Hole.") There's quite a story behind the video (linked below.) At the end of the original video, Nine Inch Nails mastermind Trent Reznor falls from a rooftop to his death (which MTV refused to air, and edited the scene.) The camera used to film that footage was tethered to a balloon, and tied down with ropes, which failed, allowing both camera and balloon to float away, landing in a farm field over 200 miles away. The FBI was called in to investigate the footage as a possible snuff/suicide film (seriously. Reznor and his manager had to prove to the Feds that the musician was alive and well. I couldn't make that up on my most creative day.) And there you have it. A great industrial dance tune with a neat story. Enjoy! (Info verified by Wikipedia)

I always say Trent Reznor is one of those sneaky musicians. For some reason people seem to like to talk smack about him, but to me was always a brilliant song writer. Made really cool lyrics and sounds. Was indeed up above it.

Wow, quite a story about the video -- ridiculous that they thought Reznor had passed -- easy enough to prove that he hadn't.

@FayeHazel - They more than likely had no idea it was footage for a music video.

@teamfreak16 Sheesh, something tells me there are a lot more valid claims out there they should have been looking in to
