I got accused of worshipping Satan.

I am an atheist and I do not go to church on Sundays. It's a choice I made and my parents despite being devout Christians are absolutely fine with. My dad said that it's fine if I do not believe in God but all that matters is that I do good and live a good life. I admire my parents for it. But today I met an aunt of mine who, when she found out I was an atheist, accused me of being a Devil Worshipper. Now that is clearly offensive and ignorant. I respect all religions and do recognise the goodness in them, but I don't go abusing them for whatever reasons. People do need to understand that Atheism doesn't have to be looked down upon. It's NOT DEVIL WORSHIPPING. Respect all the religions and if one is an atheist respect that person too. What's your take on this?

I am a Catholic and I don't go to church on Sunday but I pray always. I have a friend who is an atheist as well, but he doesn't believe in the devil as well. Of witchcraft of anything done by Satan. He respects other religions.

Yes exactly. Atheism does not only just question the presence of God but of the Devil too. Unfortunately, for my aunt, it is not so. Being religious is good, but that should not mean you need to be averse to non-believers.

@Shine10Mathew Others take this as you are worshiping the other one instead of the God.

Your aunt doesn't even know how to be a true Christian. Christians believe that only God has the right to judge but why is she judging you.

Yeah, it was such a weird conversation. If she expects to turn people towards Christianity by accusing them and forcing religion upon them, she'll drive away, even more people from the church.

I am deeply religious now but it is a choice I made. I was an atheist in my 20s and that did not make me a bad person. In fact, I was the same person I ever was from birth until then. I hope you can forgive your aunt. She has a horribly heavy burden, judging all the people in her life and living with those judgments. She has denied herself a lot of joy by becoming a prisoner of a belief system that God never intended and while she thinks she is "winning souls" she is driving so many away. There are a lot of willfully ignorant people in this world. You just have to feel sorry for them and go on with your life. Your beliefs are your own business and should not be any concern of theirs.

Yes, just as you mentioned religion has got nothing to do with how good or bad a person is. Labelling someone something derogatory just because their belief systems are not similar is indeed very ignorant. However, I do forgive her because she makes awesome plum cakes :)

Same. I respect other religions as well as if you are an atheist, no judgement here. It's not right that you were accused of that, I don't agree that being an atheist means being a satanic. I think that is misinformation and offensive.
