I am posting this discussion especially for @CoralLevang.
Diwali is celebrated for three days across India. But it is celebrated a little
differently in my state of Kerala.
No religious rites are performed here.Actually it is not celebrated in most parts of Kerala.I am living in Trivandrum which is the Capital of Kerala.
As the place if near the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu, here too Diwali is celebrated.
When I think of Diwali ,I always think about how it was celebrated during my childhood. My mother used to make many sweets and savories like Banana fritters,Lentil fritters and so many other snacks. Also we buy Sweets like laddu, jalebi etc.
The main part is of bursting of crackers, lighting different types of sparklers, flower pots etc.We kids were allowed only to hold the sparklers. The rest was done by the adults.
The next day,we got up early and the remaining sparklers and crackers were finished.
Then we all were to take baths ( after a simplified version of oil bath). Then came the Diwali Breakfast.
In some places non vegetarian Food is included for breakfast. We too usually have Mutton curry with Idly. Also, the many savories and sweets. All the family members will be sitting down together.
I was just outlining the salient points.I can't convey the anticipation, excitement, the chit chat among children and the happiness felt especially by us kids during the period.
Tomorrow morning my grand kids will be coming here.Looking forward to that.
To know how it is really celebrated around India,I wish @nomas24g posts a discussion.

@silvermist it is convenient to buy the sweet goodies now. Do children receive money as gift? Chinese do give money on Chinese New year.
