What can you do once someone’s motivation has gone?
It is so hard to pull it back again.
And what if that person is motivated predominantly by money, and there isn’t money in the budget to increase their pay?
Is there anything you can do, or is it just a downward spiral?

At work, there are only 2 things that definitely motivates me. 1. My growth and 2. Salary.
My growth motivates me because I love to explore at work.. learn something new.. try something different that can develop my potential and enhance knowledge.
Salary because of obvious reason. We all need money, I am motivated if I know and I can feel that my worth is compensated.
If their motivation is money. Then they have to move on and search for another job. Its risky but fulfilling.

It's times like that you need to get creative. There are lots of ways to work around a low budget.

is there a guarantee that a salary increase will improve their performance and ensure loyalty, even if a better opportunity elsewhere comes up? sometimes, it's better to let go an employee than stay and not contribute. it will be hard, though, for those left behind to divide the load.

I don't think there is ever any guarantee about that, is there?
