Favorite Band Names #1 - Butthole Surfers

If, by chance, you know me at all, and have been following this particular series, this should come as no surprise. #1 in my Favorite Band Names is the Butthole Surfers. Vocalist Gibby Haynes and guitarist Paul Leary (extremely underrated) formed the Butthole Surfers in San Antonio in 1981. Melding punk with a psychedelic influence and a bizarre sense of humor, the Butthole Surfers weren't actually intending to call themselves that. As the story goes, when the band played their first paying gig, the guy that introduced them forgot their name. Armed with a setlist, he saw the song "Butthole Surfer," and called them that and it stuck. Like Ministry's "Jesus Built My Hotrod?" That's Gibby on vocals. (Fun fact: Gibby most likely got his sense of humor from his dad. His father once hosted a bizarre, yet popular children's television show in Dallas.) I've linked to their classic (for them) tune, "Who was in My Room Last Night?" It was produced by Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones, and is one of my favorite songs.
