Can some nerd out there explain what the blockchain is?

Can someone explain in 10 sentences or less what the blockchain is? And why it's important to understand? I see every now and then some people mentioning it.

I am not a nerd but let me try to answer Blockchain is a SOFTWARE for Bitcoin, Litecoin, Dogecoin, etc etc etc. It is not important for me to understand. I don't want to be in mental hospital. LOL! I am not a technical person so I am not MINING CryptoCurrency (Bitcoin, etc). I am only good in ADDITION and SUBTRACTION so I am only buying/selling CryptoCurrency -- buy CryptoCurrency at lower price and exchange it to fiat currency when price is higher.

YES sometimes my money is trippled in just few months @ourlot I started earning Bitcoin from bitLanders 2 years ago. Bitcoin price at that time was only $200 plus but now it's almost $6,000. See the profit?
