@FourWalls is doing a countdown of songs with "wild" in the title, so I thought that I would join in the fun, as the two of us often do concurring music series' (and, you might be surprised to learn, we very rarely match on songs.) I am at #9: "Kings of the Wild Frontier" by Adam and the Ants. If at first you don't succeed... The title track from Adam and the Ants' second (1980) album, "Kings of the Wild Frontier" was the first single released from that record, but it performed disappointingly at best, stalling at #48 in the UK. Luckily, Kings of the Wild Frontier was a great album, and spawned two Top 5 British hits, "Dog Eat Dog" and "Ant Music." Taking advantage of that momentum, "Kings of the Wild Frontier" was re-released as a single, and it peaked at #2 (UK.) If you ever listened to Adam and the Ants, you'll recall that the band had a very unique, two-drummer sound (called the "Burundi" beat.) "Kings of the Wild Frontier" was the band's first single featuring that sound. Because of the drumming, the tune sounds very primitive, albeit with a bit of a spaghetti western type of feel, thanks to original Siouxsie and the Banshees guitarist Marco Pirroni, who not only was making his Ant debut, but cowrote much of the album with Adam Ant. If you are only familiar with Adam Ant's solo career, "Kings of the Wild Frontier" sounds absolutely nothing like songs such as "Desperate but Not Serious" or "Goody Two Shoes," but man, is it a lot of fun! I think most people are more familiar with his solo stuff. It's really good, after all.
