Do kids still Trick-or-Treat where you live?

When I was growing up in Chicago, the streets were filled with trick-or-treaters. In the early evenings, it would be the youngest ones, with their parents in tow. Then the older children, with parents at a greater distance. And finally the teens, sans parents. It was pretty festive, and I enjoyed either being a ghost or handing out candy. But in my current neighborhood I rarely see trick-or treaters. Maybe it's because most of my neighbors with kids are Indian. Or maybe it's because neighborhoods aren't really neighborhood any more. Do you usually see trick-or-treaters where you live? Will you have a jack-o-lantern lit and candy by the door this year?

There are still trick or treaters here. But I am hoping since it's a weekday, not many people will be out trick or treating. I leave a bucket out at the doorstep for the kids.

@TheHorse Just let them grab it! It worked out last year. :) The kids were honest. I do put half at a time then re-fill.

Will you hand it out? Or just let them grab it?

@infatuatedbby I can only imagine what would have happened with that approach in Chicago when I was a kid.

I feel that today there are more parties and gatherings for kids to go to and less of the parading up and down the streets for candy.

I thought of that too. It's safer, and the kids get to "party" with their friends, with parents watching.

Don't celebrate Halloween here. But I love candy and would not have minded having a day where I could get candy (and no valentines day does not count). Are you going to have a jack-o-lantern lit and candy by the door?

@TheHorse , are we going to see that little pumpkin? Sorry about the no trick or treating in your neighbourhood.

I'm going to carve my little pumpkin, but I get no trick-or-treaters here.

We get a few trick or treaters early in the evening, but mostly older, uncostumed teenagers and young adults show up later in the evening. I don't understand why 20-somethings are still going out trick or treating.

Why would someone trick-or-treat with no costume? Unless they're watching five sprouts or something.

@TheHorse I think it's because they're missing the point and just collecting free candy.

Ah, no - we don't get many trick or treaters here, but then I'm in an apartment building. I don't think anyone here has young ones. Will you still try to pass out candy? I would like some :-)

I can send you some. What's your favorite? I'd pass out candy if there were kids here who celebrated. My neighbors are mostly Indian, and I'm not sure how they treat Halloween.

Yes, trick or treating is still big here in Manila. Most of the malls and villages have trick or treat activities.

I used to love trick-or-treating as a kid. A lot of kids would do it. Now, I have the chance to do it with my kids, but not as many people do it anymore, which is kind of sad.

I wonder why people do it so much less. Is it fear? Or less neighborly neighborhoods?

I will always enjoy October 31st. Because it reminds me of the old days, when me and my brother and sister went out in our costumes and got candy in abundance! It looks like that Jackolantern in the pic above didn't actually grow up but throw up.

@TheHorse - We live in a retirement community, and we don't get any Trick or Treaters. However, much to my shock, during the four years when we lived in Irvine, we only had ONE Trick or Treater!! My grandkids, though, go to another neighborhood in Irvine where they get plenty of candy, so they are happy!

@TheHorse - Yes, they live in a part of Irvine that is very family-friendly! Most people seem to welcome Trick or Treaters and many of them even have a few Halloween decorations outside their homes.

We don't have a lot of neighbors but I'm sure the youngest of the three boys next door will come down for candy.

Where I live, it's mostly old people and, living in a cul-de-sac, we're unlikely to get children wandering in from other streets. Where I used to live was on a main road but in a not so nice part of town and we wouldn't answer them. When I was little, we weren't allowed to go trick or treating. I think it was partly because of religious reasons and partly because of mean parent reasons! Saying that, I've never let my children do it either (but they've never asked). If I do anything for Hallowe'en, it'll be a small gathering at home. It's not that big a deal in the UK as it seems in some parts of the US, although it has become more commercialised in recent years.

The numbers are dwindling in our area. Now that my children are no longer children, I have no interest in Halloween. I try to just turn the lights out and hide, but if my husband is home he wants to "shell out". Then we have a lot of candy left over... the last thing we need. I personally didn't like dressing up as a kid. Never really cared for it... though loved it when my children were little.

Ages years ago we had trick or treaters but now we don't see them. I think they go down town for Halloween festivities.

Nope. Its a country area with a lot of farms spread out over a mountain. In some areas it would be a near mile walk between houses. So churches do things together.

I live in a really small but festive town, so we get a lot of trick-or-treaters here. There are certain areas that kids just don't go anymore though. I think, that this day-in-age, it's really hard to trust anyone, especially when it comes to your kids. So I see a lot more parents taking their kids to little parties or just the trunk or treat festivities that the police department does. It's an unfortunate thing, when our kids can't live like we used to as younguns.
