Do kids play with pocket knives nowadays?

A new neighbor moved in about a month ago and they have two boys probably in elementary school, definitely not middle school yet probably 8 - 10 years old.
The kids like to go exploring around the neighborhood by themselves (not with each other) and one in particular holds a pocket knife in his hand. He is seen stabbing the dirt, trees and just the other day I saw him put his hand against the tree and doing the five finger fillet or whatever it is. Where he will stab the knife between his fingers repetitively.
Is this normal? Anyone with a knife regardless of their age could and is dangerous!

I don't think so either. Let alone be wandering around by themselves. It's a HOA community and they're not supposed to be picking at the trees, dirt, grass and so forth. They could be doing this in their backyard though.

I would be very concerned about this boy. I had a pocket knife when I was a boy but I was very careful in the way I used it, mostly to whittle wood.

It was concerning to see him out in the open with a knife.

@LadyDuck I have never seen their parents' step foot outside the home to watch what the kids are doing.

I don't think it is very common for kids to carry pocket knives these days, unless they are gangbangers maybe! haha
My son, who is 14, has several pocket knives, but he only carries them when we are doing outdoor nature stuff like hiking or camping. Normally, he doesn't carry a knife on him. Most schools nowadays consider pocket knives as weapons, which are against the rules and can easily get a kid suspended or expelled from school.
Things sure have changed since I was a kid, as we all used to carry packet knives around, even to school!

@moffittjc Ah yes, most definitely. You'll be arrested!!!!!!
Did the teacher know you were going to bring a hunting bow for your report?

@infatuatedbby No, the teacher had no idea. And she didn't even bat an eye when I walked in with the bow and arrows. She just asked, "Is that for your report?" and I said "Yep." That was about as much care as she gave that I was holding a weapon! haha
I also remember when I was a kid, we lived on the western outskirts of town (which is now smack in the middle of the city), and we would carry our rifles around with us to hunt. I remember walking on the side of a highway one time with my rifle in hand searching for rabbits, and a Sheriff deputy drove past. As he past, he honked his horn and waved. Didn't even stop to question why I was walking on the side of the highway with a rifle. Times sure have changed!

@infatuatedbby One time when I was in high school, I brought my hunting bow to school for a report I had to give in one of my classes. I walked right into the school with the bow and arrows out in full view, and nobody said a word to me. If a kid tried to do that now, they would put the school on lockdown, call in the SWAT team, and probably shoot the poor kid who was holding the bow and arrows!
{"Sir, we identified the subject as a terrorist, so we had to take him down before he could kill hundreds of innocent people!"}

This is not normal at all. Actually here children can't bring even a pencil sharpeners to school to avoid any kinds of accidents. So bringing a knife is absolutely prohibited. And the knives are not the toys. Their parents shall pay more attention to their children and guide them which are not supposed to play as toys. It can be dangerous.

@youless Yes, I would be but I don't want to get in their business but if I find them pointing a knife at me or on the house again ~ we'd definitely let their parents' know.

Oh yes, we cannot bring anything to school - not even mace! I carried mace in college though for my safety. Seems like the parents' don't care what the kids are doing. I see them wandering around every day!

I don't think they care. The kids are often wandering around. I do see them on the front lawn but this is HOA, we don't do the landscaping but they pick at the tree/grass. But if he does point the knife at me or anything, my fiancé will go over there and file a complaint.
I don't care if the kid is young or not, holding a knife is not right.

@Courtlynn But if they aren't messing with us that's fine. However, when we go home they stop and go back to their house.
However if they do !! A complaint is definitely going take place.

@infatuatedbby How is the rule in your state re: kids having a pocket knife like that in public?

This is extremely dangerous, and personally not a Good sign. Around here the kids have to be a certain age before anyone can even sell them one, and personally I think it's best they not be allowed around younger kids either.

I don't even know the age limit for when a child can buy knives. But certainly dangerous and not a good sign.

I don't think its normal either.
I know when I was that age, knives were definitely a no no! However my nephew whose young helps with cooking and handles a knife but with adult supervision and a butter knife so nothing harmful or dangerous!

I feel like these days kids are getting a little...lets say unaware of what they may be doing, and whether it may be dangerous or not. I've seen kids play the five finger stab thing, and it is definitely dangerous. In my opinion, kids who have exposure to violent things, or do violent motions, like stabbing dirt, might hurt themselves or others. Regardless, having a pocketknife or other knives are normal for some kids, just not all.

I had to look up what the term was but yes five finger stab thing ~ no idea why its a game also like on apps. I don't see any purpose. I can see pocketknives for survival or something like outdoor activities but not everyday playing outside.
