The last thing I expected in the morning before my coffee or breakfast was to hear that.
Like seriously?
Mommy, did you know the mayans hurt their babies?
So need less to say we talked some. She expanded on that statement with details that the Mayans used hot burning rags to scar the face of babies and shape flat spots.
She's only six. She is in the first grade.
Is this really age appropriate? Sure I can see this in like a high school cultural study class. But first grade? Her new people to learn about now are Aztecs. What will they cover?
Sacrifice?
Do I baby my kids to much? Is this really age appropriate?
Did your children cover this at that age??

That's too young for that. Do you go to the PTA or school board meetings? Other parents probably feel the same way.

Not yet. It just caught me off guard. I just feel bad since it seems like I'm always complaining about something (though I'm not really, the school is just handling my youngest daughter's allergy/asthma needs very poorly that I'm so close to home schooling her).
So I've been trying to find an average first grade curriculum to compare what this teacher is doing.

I used to read the encyclopedia on my own at that age as well as check out tons of books about different cultures, so I didn't really worry too much about age appropriate learning with my own. As long as they don't make it some long drawn out scary thing, I wouldn't worry about it.

That is way too young to learn about that. No, my kids didn't learn about that first grade.
