Teenager Kids stole the CANDY I left out!

United States

I am super upset! Every year, we leave a bucket of candy out front with a sign that says Take 1, Happy Halloween! And every few minutes, I'll check to refill if necessary. By 6:05 PM, no trick-or-treaters yet... until I heard some footsteps. I peeked in the peephole and two teenager girls were like oh! These candy are good, that won't last long! Then, two teenager boys, go - let's take all and leave one! I thought they were joking. I opened the door shortly as they left. They took all but one! I saw them across the street and started screaming, Wow seriously? You acted as if I didn't hear you? You don't know how to share! They quickly walked off. I refilled one more time, turned around in less than a few minutes. Candy was GONE AGAIN! No idea who took it this time... So my last bag, I physically handed out candy to the trick or treaters (this time the little ones) and officially ran out of candy. What a disappointing Halloween. Last year, the candy lasted until 8PM with the sign that said Take 1 + we had lots extra! And at that time, I had bought less candy bags then this year!

Sorry to hear that. Some people just ruin it for others because they are so greedy.

They were older teenagers too, about 16 years old (not dressed in a costume). I looked in the peephole and then heard their remark. Thought they were just kidding, totally not. So sad to have to turn off the lights early. I bought 3 good sized bags too!

Maybe teenagers shouldn't be trick or treat over there if they are greedy. It would ruin the child's moment if they get shoe out of the house. In my opinion kids should be the ones doing the trick and treats with the guides of their guardians or parents.

If the teens are going for fun with their younger sibling yes but to ruin it for all the other trick or treaters is wrong.

oh. all along i thought the practice was they come to your house, say 'trick or treat' then wait to be given the chocolates. i didn't know you can also leave them out for them to pick from. so what will you do next year?

Yes they do say Trick or Treat, but since they come during dinner time. I don't want to keep getting up and walking to open the door (and my hands are messy eating). I've always left a bucket and had no problem, but I guess this year it's an unlucky time with dishonest kids. Next year I'll hand them out for a hour or so only.

If the trend of selfish teenagers continue, soon there will be no more treat or tricks.

If they wanted to grab so much candy, why not take the ones from their home!

Thats sad, but unfortunately thats to be expected with teens - or really anyone these days -when you leave the candy out which is why we never do that.

I've never had it happened.. Last year bought less candy and even ended up with extra! Everyone was so sweet and honest. No teenagers though.

@Courtlynn Yes I am sure little kids too. But for the most part, never had that problem. I did hear the kids saying that but I thought they were joking. I should opened the door immediately when they said that.

@infatuatedbby to be fair, even little kids do that. All depends on being taught manners and respect.

We left candy out one year because we would not be home when the kids came around. They took everything, including the bowls we had set out. One thing you can do next time is to put up a sign that says, "Property Is Under Video Surveillance." Most times this is enough to prevent the greedy teenagers from stealing all the candy.

Wow that sucks (even the bowl). How inconsiderate of people. Last year the years before, we had no problem. We even had extras Next year, I will hand out whatever I can and then stop early because I had to leave my dinner cold.

In fact today children almost have whatever they want. Candies are not something special for them. I doubt why they took all the candies. They don't have to eat so much. Maybe they waste some of them at last. They are just a little greedy.

Really was. Greedy teenagers. At most, grab a handful and keep going. Nope, took all and left exactly one.

I just can't imagine ever thinking it was ok to take the whole bowl. MAYBE when I was in middle school (I wasn't allowed to trick or treat after that) MAYBE we took 2 or 3 if the candy was good, but never did I dump the whole bowl!

@infatuatedbby Right?? Lately I keep hearing about "college kids" and older who never give up trick or treating and ruin it for the little kids because people either have to buy the cheap candy instead of the good stuff, or turn their lights off because they can't afford to give candy to children AND teenagers AND adults. Good grief, when did trick or treating become a free-for-all?

I tried doing what you did two Halloweens in a row, and just like you experienced, I had teenagers take the entire bowl. So now I won't just leave a bowl out, because I can't trust the little sh*theads in the neighborhood. Why do teenagers have to be so bad? Wait...I was a bad teenager like that! Don't answer that question! haha

@moffittjc Haha yes but I was peeking in the hole and it was the teenagers ruining it! Which I eventually opened the door & yelled you act like I didn't here YOU?!

I don't get why teenagers have to ruin it for the little ones. I've done this before and last year had a success. Even left over candy (and I had less than this year)! They were so sweet, I heard them from my desk and they'd say trick or treat, read the sign & go thank you and leave. Even though they spoke to the door only! Gah so sweet.

@infatuatedbby All it takes is one kid to ruin it for everyone. You might have had every other teenager being courteous, and then that one egghead comes along and takes all the candy. Of course, I could be wrong and it could have been all of those little turds! haha

You can't trust kids to just take one. I would never do that. I know better! It is either deal with all of the knocks at the door or don't participate.

I've done it a few times actually! Last year was the best of all. Had left over candy and bought less than this year. It isn't that I don't want to hand it out but it's during my dinner time they come.

I'd never leave the bag out... plus seeing the trick or treaters is part of the fun. If I didn't want to sit out and hand out the candy I'd just leave all the lights off and not do anything at all.
