In order to keep the saccharine level down and show consideration for anyone who has diabetes, I thought I should counter the current countdown of bubblegum songs with CLASSIC RAWK!!!!!!! But this is unusual, in that these are ten songs that you may be surprised to find out that I actually like in the world of overplayed FM rock. There are a few guaranteed surprises on the list (fear not, Journey isn't one of them ). Here's the first song.
#10: Truckin' - Grateful Dead
For someone who road trips as much to concerts as I do, you might think I learned that from being a Dead Head. Nope. I never "got" the Dead. Of course, I never did drugs, either, so.....
Yeah, I know that's a stereotype of the Dead. But this song references a time the band was arrested in New Orleans (January 31, 1970, when their hotel rooms were raided and 19 members of the entourage were arrested following a show at the Warehouse): "got a tip they're gonna kick the door in, I'd like to get some sleep before I travel but if you've got a warrant I guess you're gonna come in. Busted, down on Bourbon Street."
But I still like this bluesy shuffle. I didn't realize that until a week or so ago, when I was in a restaurant and this came on the piped-in music...and I found myself singing along.
Just like the doo-dah man.
And, of course, this song has given us one of the classic catch phrases of the past 40-plus years: "what a long, strange trip it's been."
Truckin'
Written by Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, and Robert Hunter
Recorded by the Grateful Dead
From American Beauty, 1970
Lately it occurs to me:
Grateful Dead singing Truckin', with lyrics added to the video. I do not own the music and the footage used in the video. No copyright infringement intended....
