Hard work Vs Smart work

Which really brings success in life? In school Book I read that hard work always brings success, so dont be lazy, So world's rich person, are they do work hard or do smart way, to get it done by others and they can get success and money. Or it is a combination of hard and smart work to achieve bigger ambition.

i guess it is a combination of both.. since sometimes smart work cannot be applied to everything
