Several discussions back I wrote about Spike Milligan and was surprised to learn he seemed largely unknown in the US. So I won’t presume you’ve ever heard of Michael Leunig although again I would have thought he’s have an international following. He is an Australian cartoonist and an example of his work is above. He often manages to include social commentary in his cartoons. I remember one Christmas card designed by Leunig. Santa and his reindeer were stopped at a red light while a little donkey bearing a pregnant woman and accompanied by a man slowly made their way across the intersection. He has always been something of an enigma and didn’t do well at school although he has great intelligence. He has supplied cartoons for several prestigious Australian magazines and newspapers. His work hangs in many private and public collections and in 1999, he was declared a ‘National Living Treasure’ by the National Trust. So there you go. Have you by any chance heard of him?

I never heard of him. The only official Aussie "National Living Treasure" I know of was the late Slim Dusty.

I know people like this. They'll go off at someone for the exact same faults that they have themselves.

Well it turned out well for him. Maybe if he was good at school he would've been doing something else now. I haven't heard of him

He's probably best known in Australia - and maybe hardly known at all elsewhere.

It's hard to forget the strange figures he draws. I don't like them much.

@JudyEv You are right, too simple aren't they! How do you like the cartoons from Bart Simpson series? I so disliked them at first (slightly tolerant to them these days however, but still think of them as ugly like crazy!).

@JudyEv And some artists are only famous long after their deaths.

@shaggin That is probably more true. I often wonder what people like Mozart, Da Vinci, etc would think now of how they are revered when some wouldn't give them the time of day when they were alive.

@JudyEv Sometimes you wonder whether the visitors are really noticing or appreciating the places they go to, they're just obsessed with getting the perfect selfie.

It's a clever comment isn't it? At some tourist spots there are selfie sticks all over the place.

@Fleura That's very true. Some tourists really rush through places and they miss so much.

I've never heard of Leunig, but maybe that's just because I'm not into cartoon much. Just scrolled through his works on his website, some of them are a bit hard for me to understand.
