Saying no to the boss

So, as we all know, next week is Thanksgiving here in the US and because of that, I knew going in that next week was going to be a very light week at work and as much as I need the money to pay bills, I am also very much looking forward to an entire week of not having to be awake before the sun and not having to spend hours on end in the car. On Thursday morning I received my schedule for next week and as expected there was little of nothing on it. That is fine with me, I choose to think of it as a vacation of sorts. Well, yesterday early afternoon they called me and said I would be doing a medical assignment on Monday that is three hours away. I told them that I wouldn't. That wasn't a part of the schedule that I had accepted and I already had other plans for that day (what I didn't tell them is that those plans were only to take a week off from driving three hours each way for an assignment). There is a part of me that feels bad about it, but there is also a part of me that feels like if I am constantly telling them yes that I will end up being completely walked all over. Most of the time I do say yes to changes in my schedule, but this time, I said no just because I didn't want to do it. Do you ever say no to the boss?

@dorannmwin I´m sorry That should not happen. How do the kids feel about that? Do you get to see them?

Actually, there are still a lot of problems in my life right now but I am dealing with them in the best way that I am able to. The kids still live with their grandparents because the grandparents were able to manipulate the system in their favor but that doesn't mean that I've given up, I am working on getting a good attorney to try again.

Wow that sounds awful having to drive that much for your job. I couldn’t do it I am way to nervous as a driver. I only drive that far every other year or so and I dread it.

@dorannmwin Do they reimburse you for the gas or do you drive a company vehicle.

@shaggin The vast majority of the time they provide me with either a company vehicle or a rental to drive for work. There are times that we are asked to drive our own cars and when we do that they reimburse us for the mileage that we put on our personal vehicles.

I really don't mind to do it every now and then but I have to admit that they are sending me down that way all the time now and I don't like it at all.

i used to when it got way too much to handle. but seldom. my daughter does that in hopes of getting more pay or promotion but alas as i keep telling her, it never works out that way really. they just keep taking advantage

Oh, I agree completely, saying yes all the time really doesn't do anything at all for us. That is part of the reason that I've started to say no.

Sometimes you just gotta say no or else, like you said, they will think they can walk all over you. My husband is the type who will often do more than what is required of him, but even he has to put his foot down because they think he will say yes. The whole company is taking between Christmas and New Year's off . . . we already made plans for that week . . . and now they are saying they have a project that needs to get done that week . Um, no. And everyone needs a reasonable break!!

I requested off for that week because my brother and my nieces are going to be in town then and wouldn't you know that the boss pretty much told me that it would be impossible to be off. I've been there for over three years and I've never requested a whole week off. Why can't I have it just once?

@much2say No, we don't get sick days but in honesty, when they want to make a last minute change to a schedule that we had already accepted, we are able to reject the assignment, which is exactly what I did.

@dorannmwin Oh, so they did indeed change the schedule even though you already received the schedule for the week? That is so not cool. Do you get sick days? Start coughing .

I don't think you need to feel guilty, three hours away is quite far. Plus the schedule was already out and they should have expected that people could have made plans in advance, even if it's just staying at home.

That was pretty much my thoughts on it. I wouldn't have complained about it if it had been a part of my original schedule but at this point I'm getting pretty frustrated with last minute schedule changes.

In that situation I might also have said no. I am a substitute teacher now, I don't have to accept any assignnent. Of course , when I taught full time there was no altering schedules.

That is true about being a full time teacher. The beauty of that though is that you know plenty in advance what your schedule is.

@dorannmwin Yes. Right when all the vacation spots are expensive and fully booked. I enjoy my part time schedule now (subbing)

@paigea Well, that is true about the places being higher priced and such, but to have a set schedule really would be a dream for me.

If I can accommodate the request, I'd gladly do so but if plans have been made, I'd say no.

Honestly, my main plan was just to not have to travel that far during a holiday week. That said, I know that the roads are dangerous and will be even more so with the holiday travel and that is why I said no.

I did once many years ago. The result was I was fired.

That stinks that you were fired for saying no. To me, if they are asking you to go above and beyond there should not be any kind of repercussions for not being able to do it.

Yes I have before when there is a bigger priority, such as your situation And at my work place they can’t tell me anything because they do for other staff and they have to do for me
