I used to donate blood many years ago, when I was on active duty and after I retired. My non-profit organztion would would coordinate the bloodmobile to come to our parking lot. We were close to a 2yr college. I am no longer eligible to donate.

I started this last year, because my husband donates regularly. Now my son donates, too. He even does plasma apharesis, which just takes the platelets. Requires a two hour block of time on his day off, plus an hour drive each way. We are proud of him.

I looked at all of the responses, and I see that many people get disqualified due to low red blood cells, or anemia. That used to happen to my husband often, or he would be just barely able. This time he took iron supplements and ate beef for a week before hand and was just fine. On the other hand, I almost could not, the nurses say it is not something to worry about, it might just be diet. Drinking tea lowers blood count, so do other caffeinated drinks--soda pop. What really was my problem is that if you eat a lot of beans the fiber binds with the iron and causes it to be excreted. I love beans, and had eaten a lot of them that week. Just be careful for a day or two before the blood drive and you should test okay.
