Food and Drink : What's on Your Thanksgiving Table?

Thanksgiving Dinner

One of my daughters tell everyone that her word for her memories of our holiday meals is Unbelievable! I have to admit, when they were younger I did go all out. But they've grown up, my husband's diet has changed, and I find that I'm cooking less and less food instead of the humongous spread that I used to prepare. Still! Every holiday there are these nagging questions about what should be served. We all know that turkey and stuffing with cranberry sauce are NOT optional. But after that what would you include as “extras” for your Thanksgiving Dinner? Ham OR No Ham Dressing made with Italian Turkey Sausage OR made with Tamales (We live in Texas now. This would have been a question in Florida.) Rice Dish OR Mashed Potatoes Gravy w/Mushrooms OR No Gravy Mac-n-Cheese OR Sweet Potatoes (with marshmallows on top) Green Beans OR Brussel Sprouts OR Green Leafy Vegetable (like collards or kale) Carrots OR No Carrots Squash Casserole OR No Squash Side Dish ~ Period! Cornbread or Dinner Rolls Pumpkin Pie OR Apple Pie OR Peach Cobbler Ice Cream OR Jello * * * Decisions. Decisions. Decisions. Are your typical items on the list of choices above? What is your traditional Thanksgiving meal?

I do 1/10 of what I used to do, I will have the turkey, dressing, gravy with cranberries. Potato salad and green beans. One pie.

No Thanksgiving in Latvia. I do miss this holiday. My table always had a turkey with Italian sausage stuffing and many different side dishes among the even mashed sweet potatoes. Hope you enjoy yours.

Because of my husband's dietary changes, my son says he could accept a dressing with no sausage (i.e. made vegetarian style), but he won't accept not having any dressing at all! I found a link that list the holidays in Latvia. Many are national or religious days or related to the changes of the seasons. I don't know much about Latvia.

@RasmaSandra - Sorry to hear of your husband's passing. Holidays are never the same without your loved ones. Hope I didn't hurt or offend you. It was not my intent.

@cmoneyspinner we actually have too many holidays when they want us to put up the Latvian flag and with my husband's passing all I can do is prop up the flag against the house wall. So now I am glad that we won't need to put up a flag for a long time.

We do Turkey, Ham, stuffing, mashed potatoes, rolls, broccoli casserole, mac and cheese, fruit bowl, and a whole lot of other stuff. We have thanksgiving at my sisters and she has everyone bring a dish to pass. She provides the turkey and my dad provides the ham and we all bring whatever dishes we want too, it works out well.

That does work well. We tried that once and I enjoyed it. My son had a girlfriend and our families got together to celebrate. But he and the girl broke up and now it's back to me preparing the meal. My daughter brought some dishes last night that just need to be warmed up. That's a help. Enjoy your holiday!

We do not celebrate Thanksgiving in Europe and turkey is surely not the favorite meat in this part of the world, as well as the sweet potatoes, the cornbread and the Jello.

@LadyDuck - was going through my old blog posts and found the link. Sharing in case you're interested.
There is plenty of history behind holidays, but sometimes we only know our nation's history. Here is how Thanksgiving is celebrated in countries around the world.

@cmoneyspinner Of course it is, because Thanksgiving is to celebrate the first harvest the Pilgrim had in the "New World". It makes no sense to celebrate this in the "old world".

Since I live by myself; there is no need for me to make a big Thanksgiving meal. I will probably go to somebodies house to celebrate Thanksgiving.

It's nice to be invited. I would like to be invited but people usually pile up at my house. A friend of mine published this HUB. I'll share it in case other single people don't get an invitation.
Thanksgiving for most people is a time of family celebration and feasting on the seasonal turkey and trimmings. There are some, however, who are forced to spend Thanksgiving alone and may be under the impression that a turkey dinner is not therefore feasib

Last holiday I cooked the turkey but I also decided to bake some extra chicken. I got no complaints. In fact, they were quite pleased.

We don't have Thankksgiving here. It's Christmas day that is like a Thanksgiving Day for us. We also prepare a lot. Although, in lieu of the roasted turkey usually it's roasted pork or lechon that is ordered for the occasion.
