Android: Jailbroken is called rooted device in android. You can check it by installing an app in Google Play called Root Checker.
iOS: Try uninstalling default built in Apple apps like iTunes. If you can, then it is jailbroken. Or you may try finding an app from your phone called Cydia.
Jailbroken or rooted phones have advantages and disadvantages. They can affect your phone customizations, security, tweaking, and using of third party apps.

@gibocam I'm just a regular iPhone user who doesn't want to nullify the warranty of my phone and I'm not interested in other things but the normal function of my phone. Plus the rest of my gadgets are from apple and I need to synch all of them without any problem. I always update them to the latest iOS, and that includes my MacBook pro's OS.

@toniganzon iPhone have their warranties. If someone do it, they must know what they are doing. But as a techie & developer, I don't mind as long as it helps me with development. Not recommended for regular smart phone users.
