Question of the Day: Is it Okay to Always Say "No Regrets"

November 25, 2017 11:27am CST
We often hear the phrase "No regrets" from people who are just to do an action and from people who just finished doing an action. Sometimes they stick to it, sometime they don't. As individuals, we may not really be that aware of our tendencies to whisper this under our breath and/or at the back of our heads. May it be a form of rationalization or just an expression of our attitude and optimism. However, is it really that worth it to say "No Regrets" and just face the consequences? And of course I am talking about the genuine "No regrets" statement and not just the "No regrets" utterance but with constant worry attacks throughout the day. Is it okay to regret at times or is it much better to be prepared with the consequences of your own decisions; just accepting what happens next without thinking of the what ifs and what could have been? Sure, it is human nature to regret but the human mind can interfere with such an innate matter, yes? :)

If people accepted their action then mostly they will tell this phrase. Sometimes it's the satisfaction they have after or before doing it that would tell no regrets.

I don't live in an English speaking country. I don't know this expression. Can you give an example when someone would say that?

For example, a young guy decides to throw a house party at their own house while his parents are not around (without asking their permission). He invites his friends to party and exclaims that expression thinking that he won't have any regrets if his parents would ever find out about him or not. Another example would be a long married couple deciding to get divorced and upon separating ways, they say "No regrets" to each other and to themselves. Connoting their optimism that this decision wont screw them up in the future and that whatever consequences they face out of it shall be subjected to plain ignorance

Regretting doesn't mean not moving on so maybe it's fine to do sometimes. But having no regrets will show good drive in life and sticking to you line. Cause I think everyone is going on the top floor, just some of us use elevator and others used stair. At least we can arrive either way so no regret.

I agree sometimes it feels like a cop out after making a poor decision. Similarly with "YOLO (yiu only live once)". I think its ok to admit you did something wrong and learn from it.

Impossible to say no regrets all the time. Everybody has something they regret, either who they married, their career choice or something to regret.

Sometimes, but if you are gonna harm someone else or yourself I guess it wouldn't be OK/

Ideally no one wants to regret their decisions, but in certain cases we just can't help regretting wrong decisions. I think the most important thing is to focus on moving forward.

Regretting is pointless. Whatever has happened is not going to be reversed. It is better to think about present and possibly future.
