# 99 Let me share another enjoyable dining experience… This time at a place called Pepper Lunch. It is a ‘fast-steak’ restaurant franchise founded in 1994 in Japan. Over two hundreds Pepper Lunch restaurants now in Japan and they have branched out internationally in several countries. Many in south-east Asian countries would probably be familiar with the brand; its branches can be found in Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Brunei. They are also available in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, and South Korea. Outside Asia, they have opened franchises as far away as Canada and, of course, in Australia... The menu offers quite a variety from beef, chicken, and seafood. From the signature dish of pepper rice to premium steak, teppan pasta, sizzling curry rice, and even desserts are served on a hot plate. The meat is brought to the table half-cooked complete with instruction on how to cook it completely before eating. For non-meat eaters, a wide range of vegetarian dishes are also available. Meat-free selection of veggie curry or creamy pasta is also served on a sizzling hot plate... In the picture from top left to bottom right are: from the menu, volcano waffle, beef pepper rice, and wagyu premium steak...

@sishy7 Yes not yet. :) Was the food reasonable priced maybe $15-20 a person?

Yes, besides the classic beef or chicken, the pepper rice can also be ordered with salmon, prawn (shrimp), eel, or combination of all three seafood... Do you like to eat rice?

Ohhhhh, my kinda food ! It's one to put on the checklist (not sure I can drive all the way out there anytime soon ) . . . or maybe they'll eventually bring it to L.A.!). Is their food actually "peppery"? I don't think I've ever had pepper flavored rice before!

@sishy7 That sounds like fun! Hubby likes ordering fajitas on those hot plates . . . so I know he would absolutely love such a place. I'd totally go if it were closer to us!

Yes, but it's not too peppery... Not only that we can customize how well done we want the meat to be, but we can also adjust the taste by putting whatever and however much sauces we want to then mix everything up on the hot plate before eating... It's fun!

@rebelann It's possible to order a take-away from them... But they won't include the hot iron plate with the take-away... What they do is, once the food is out of the kitchen on the hot iron plate, the server will finish up the cooking on the hot plate before packing it in a take-away container...

No, we finish the cooking right there on the table... It was just very briefly mixing all the ingredients up while they are grilling on the hot iron plate...

I don't think they do... It was just more like we're mixing all the ingredients up while they are still grilling on the hot iron plate...

Seems so odd they only cook it halfway then you have to do the rest. I am intrigued by this as I've never of this food chain before. I don't like pepper so if that is a main ingredient I wouldn't like their food. Being a vegetarian I love hearing there are options I could eat there!

To me, it's not too peppery and there are other spices too as the pepper taste is not too overwhelming... Yes, the vegetarian dishes are very attractive featuring ingredients like tofu and tempeh (also made of soybean).

Sounds delicious and tasty, but when I eat out, I don't want to cook. I did that once at a Korean barbecue in Hong Kong.

Actually, the amount of self-cooking required here was very minor compared to a Korean barbecue... Basically, we just needed to let the meat grill on the hot iron plate to a desired done-ness and that could be very quick... In just a few minutes we can start enjoying the food without having to keep cooking...

@DianneN Yeah, I wouldn't want to be the dishwasher in that restaurant... Just one iron plate seems heavy, can't imagine a stack of them...

@sishy7 and other yummy dishes. Expensive though! (Downstairs somewhere in that building was a Border bookstore, we often searched for sale items in there while my husband took care of the bill.)
