The Globe Theater

“The Globe Theatre was a theatre in London associated with William Shakespeare. It was built in 1599 by Shakespeare's playing company, the Lord Chamberlain's Men, on land owned by Thomas Brend and inherited by his son, Nicholas Brend and grandson Sir Matthew Brend, and was destroyed by fire on 29 June 1613.” As l remember from my study as an English literature student and teacher, the cause for the fire in 1613 was from firing a cannon near the thatched roof of the building. Some embers from the cannon shot alighted the thatched roof, and the theater burned, just three years before Shakespeare’s death in Stratford-upon- Avon where he lived in retirement. The ‘modern’ globe, patterned after the original one on the south bank of the Thames River today. The theater company there presents plays as far as they can as they would have presented them in Shakespeare’s day. Quotation and facts from Wikipedia and my study and teaching of English literature for over 50 years.

Have you been there? I was on a guided tour through the New Globe when it was still being constructed and later saw two plays. A wonderful experience.
