Favorite "New" Songs #7 - "New Rose"

It's hard to believe that this one is as old as it is. I am counting down my favorite songs with "new" in the title, and we are at #7: "New Rose" by The Damned.
Produced by Nick Lowe, "New Rose," from their 1976 debut album, Damned Damned Damned, introduced The Damned to the world. It was the first ever single released by a British punk band, and reached #81 in the UK.
My guess is that people weren't quite sure what to make of it, being an aggressive, somewhat snotty punk tune sung by a vocalist that looked like a goth vampire in Dave Vanian.
The song was performed by the Damned's classic lineup of Vanian, guitarist Brian James, bassist Captain Sensible, and drummer Rat Scabies. It was recorded in one day.
"New Rose" was covered by Guns N' Roses for their 1993 album, The Spaghetti Incident?
I've linked to a video that shows the band performing the song live. It's early punk at it's finest.
Enjoy!

The video for The Damned's first single on Stiff Records was filmed in the basement of the Hope & Anchor pub in Islington, London, down the road from Pathway...

I had to laugh at the drummers name. It sounded kind of like a garage band, but a very interesting garage band.

Check this out: It's their very non-punk cover of Love's "Alone Again Or." Much better production.

Didn't that opening spoken bit, "Is she really going out with him?", inspire Joe Jackson to write his classic song? Seems I read that somewhere.

So far I've only found him saying that he "heard it somewhere." But it's the only thing that makes sense.

Now that's punk! See the drummer with cig dangling and manically beating away? The Damned are in the punk hof for sure.

Oh hell yeah. One of the original UK punk bands.

Hm, didn't Patricia Morrison (Sisters of Mercy) join them for a bit?
