Cougar; also known as Mountain Lion, Puma, or Panther.
We live in America. The state of Pennsylvania in the Northeast region. If you ask our Game Commission if cougars exist in our area they would answer NO! Although over the past several years there has been many sightings and even pictures taken by many different people.
Well while my husband was out archery hunting one morning this year he had a cougar encounter. While sitting up in his tree stand he noticed some movement in a area where the land owner had cut down some trees. Thinking it was a deer he watched it until it stepped out in a clear area. To his surprise it was no deer. It was a cougar. He watched it as it passed by about 50 yards out. He thought of all the times he walked to his tree stand over the years by himself in the dark before daylight. How many times he may have been stalked without knowing it! He said next year he will carry a hand gun for protection since he has seen bears, bobcats, coyotes and now a cougar.
Late talking to the land owners they stated that they have seen cougars on several occasions. "Scary"
How about you do you have cougars where you live?

I think they are defintely making a return to the East. I think they may be in the Adirondacks..so it is not super surprising they are in PA. Some people around my area in VA have thought they have seen them, but they turned out to be bobcats. Honestly, at this point, it wouldn't surprise me if they turned up just about anywhere.

There are mountain lions way up in the hills and mountains here but they stay away from people.

There has only been one here at my property and that was when we were the only persons living on this road. It was the color of a Black Panther. My husband (the idiot) went to shoot it. He did nick the cat's shoulder but the bullet went into the bumper of the car "that we were renting at the time". Uh-Duh!! I'm glad the Couger/Panther was able to get away @Butchcass4 . I have more coyotes and foxes; the coyotes of course being the more dangerous.

No cougars in Australia. It is certainly scary to think your husband might have been stalked by one of these. They are elegant creatures though aren't they?
