Do people online matter?

I feel so awful for what I accidently said to someone. In the World of Warcraft game there are two means of communicating with people. If you have someone on battle tag you can talk to them in or outside the game. Then when logged in the game you can talk to people in says or private message. So I login and my sister battle tag messaged me. She saw my character! Well, I had logged out when I got her message and popped back in. She had mentioned changing her character name because it made her think of a pasta dish. I didn't know the new name. I made the mistake to assume the character standing right next to me was her, since it was a C name and she said her new one had started with a C. The name was Cowlina or something like that, but I started making jokes about steaks and stuff. Like how is Cow-lina any better than a pasta dish? among other not nice things that I said in a joke to tease my sister. My sister battle tags me that I'm not talking to her... and I realize my mistake! I do apologize but they went offline before I could send the second part of my apology! I felt so bad. Then I was told by someone to not worry its just a random person and they don't mater. That doesn't make me feel any better. Do random people on the internet mater? should they mater? Maybe if they did, more people would be nicer overall. Instead, I think the internet often gives people the means to say harsh things they never would have the balls to say to people directly.

Do random people in the neighborhood where you live matter? I think being online in a game like that is like being in a neighborhood. I think all people matter whether they are online or off.

So true. I know people just see screen names but I know behind each set of letters is a real person. They matter even if I'll never meet them in life.

People on the internet do have feelings after all, I hope you can find that person once again and tell that you're sorry..

I added them as a friend! I did at least get one message to apologize and tell them I mistaken them for being my sister who had just changed her name since it was the name of a pasta dish! I hope they can find humor in the situation!

I think many don't believe that people online matter. Why else would some say the vicious things they say on FB? It seems there is very little respect for anyone nowadays. I hope you're able to reach this person to apologise properly.

@Daelii I doubt it's a scenario that they'd think up by themselves. Hopefully they'll see your message.

I hope they get my message! Its sad but true that online has brought out some awful things. If anything I think everything is neither good nor bad. Its the intention/ motivation behind the action that makes it good or bad. I hope they understand it was light hearted teasing meant for a sister!

@Courtlynn very true! But it was clearly not a name of a person. It was definitely a screen name for an online game!

You said that lovely! I really do hope they get my apology. I can't help but hope that they have humor to have used that name in the first place!

As long as you apologized, you should be fine. It was a mistake. You thought it was your sister and people say things to siblings they may not say to someone else. If they have a sense of humor, they'll laugh it off and who knows it could be the start of a beautiful new friendship

Isn't that the truth! I would never pick in someone to be mean. But it was just to hard to pass up when I thought my sister changed her name from a pasta dish to a steak dish!

I think random people do matter, but since you didn't mean them any harm I think everything will be fine as long as you apologize and explain what happened. Dont feel too bad, I'm sure it was an honest mistake! :D

This will probably be a memory that you laugh at one day, and it was just a mistake. I think you're right, the internet lets many people sit at home and say horrible things, because they're cowards.

I do kinda laugh at it! If anything it has taught me to be a little careful in my jokes and make sure I'm talking to the right person!
