I was in a funk mood the other day, so I started counting down my favorite funk songs. We are at #7: "Pull Up to the Bumper" by Grace Jones.
Yes, the most classic funk was produced in the 1970's, but the genre had it's moments in the 80's as well. "Pull Up to the Bumper" was Grace Jones' (who jumped effortlessly between styles in a very Bowie-esque way) foray into funk, a hit from her superb 1981 album, Nightclubbing.
Featuring legendary reggae rhythm section Sly (Dunbar, drums,) and Robbie (Shakespeare, bass,) "Pull Up to the Bumper" is hands down one of the best funk tunes of the 1980's.
The song resonated with the dance club crowd, reaching #2 on Billboard's Hot Dance Club Songs chart (and #5 on that magazine's R&B Singles chart.) All told, the tune charted in nine countries, hitting Top 20 in five of those.
I've linked to the official video. If you dig funk, I think you'll find Robbie Shakespeare's sick funk bass play quite satisfactory.
Enjoy!

An unexpected choice. Grace Jones follows Homer and Jethro.

She's very charismatic. Very underappreciated, at least here in the States.

She never really caught on over here, unfortunately. Because she's awesome.

Ah, what a nice flashback. And, you know, watching that, I had a thought go through my mind: people like Madonna and Lady Gaga owe her royalties for stealing her act.
