Why are dogs afraid of blast sounds?

Why are dogs have to suffer every New Year? It’s a tradition here in my country to have fireworks for the celebration of New Year. I’m sad looking my dogs because they’re very afraid of the blast sounds of fireworks. They’re shivering and hiding under my table. I can’t help but console them. My dog(on the left) doesn’t want to eat. He feels so nervous.
Why are dogs afraid of blast sounds? Are there any explanations on that?

Dogs hear other sound waves. Those are ear piercing for them.

@rheicel How about buying those things human beings put in their ears? Forgot the name.

@marguicha We've tried covering their ears but they didn't like it.

Their ears are extremely sensitive to sounds. They can hear whistle from miles away.
I hope some one out there makes ear plugs specifically for dogs. I haven't really known it yet.

I haven't seen also ear plugs for dogs. We've tried putting something on their ears but it didn't work.

Because they don't know what this sudden noise is like us.... Just like any sudden noise around us surprises or scares us , the same is for them

Dogs have sensitive hearing so what appears normal to us humans sounds like the whole world falling on top of them!

Maybe try playing music to drown out the sound of the fireworks?

One of my dogs is afraid of loud noises but the other is not bothered too much. They do have very sensitive ears though so I suppose it sounds twice as loud to them as it does to us.

@rheicel Oh we have bonfire night on November 5th but the awful thing is people buy the fireworks long beforehand and they let them off for weeks after. It's to celebrate a foiled attempt at burning down the Houses of Parliament centuries ago. It's a nightmare for dogs that are afraid of them. Some people let them off at New Year too.

@rheicel I would never leave my dogs alone in the firework season as they would be terrified. They will never be banned here.

The explanation of @marguicha is correct. Dogs have much more sensitive hearing than humans, they have a very acute sense of hearing and they hear sounds four time farther than humans.
