Demoted to my laptop again

Sick computer

In days gone by I could perform a complete reinstall and load programs in a fairly short period of time, although that has changed vastly over the years. Now that I am using Windows 10 it takes longer and also utilises a greater amount of space. The same applies with the software that will need reinstalling, some of which takes up several gigabytes. Fortunately I have a laptop which will serve as a replacement until my desktop computer is back in action.

I prefer to work on my desktop, so I do understand how you feel.

I feel content with using a laptop, but I do prefer a desktop myself.

I also have a laptop, when I have problems and the desktop refuses to start, I use the laptop to make searches.

My laptop gets very little use these days because I used it mainly while on holiday, which has not happened since last January. I am now contemplating changing the laptop operating system to Ubuntu, which I have not used for a while.

@LadyDuck I believe that the latest version is Ubuntu 16, so it will be interesting to see how it has changed.

@Asylum I installed Ubuntu on my laptop, it takes less space, it boots faster and I can change/update the system without losing data.

@bunnybon7 Yea, a desktop is far more user friendly. As you say, they are also a much higher specification.

That just sounds so odd to me, I've been using windows 10 since last year and I haven't had any issues with it. So far I haven't had to make time for instillations for updates, it simply does it automatically without disrupting my time on the PC.

I was not having any problems with it, but I always consider it good practice to start anew periodically.

@rebelann Yes, I wipe the drive clean and begin installing Windows, followed by software programs. I have to re enter email addresses and reconfigure the computer as I prefer it, but it does help.

By "start anew" do you mean you uninstall then reinstall everything @Asylum ?

Everything is so much more complex and so much larger than in the past. I have several different laptops as well as a desktop and an iPad, I can't be offline, I'd go mad.

It had changed vastly over the years, which really shows when I reinstall everything and use 31 Gb of hard drive space.

I rarely use my laptop. I have all my teaching materials on it and only use it for work now! Its a useful standby though!

Mine used to be primarily for holidays since it was portable. These days it simply qualifies as a reserve. When my desktop is back in action I may change my laptop to Linux for a while.

To me the laptop is more practical when travelling, but it is more than adequate as a temporary replacement.

@Asylum Guess depends on what you do on your laptop. I love my MacBook Pro with Touch Bar. So convenient to work even in bed.

I only have a laptop, and you are right - some updates seem to take forever with Windows 10.

Whenever I remove everything and start afresh, I always acquire the blastest release of Windows 10. This reduces the amount of updates required once it is loaded.

I am not actually having trouble with it. I consider it good practice to wipe everything and start anew on a fairly frequent basis.

At least you have other options when updating your computer in any way. I still don't have windows ten and may not bother if I can manage it or at least until I can afford an updated quickbooks for our business.

The worst part of updating the operating system is that often it will not support our software and we need to upgrade.

@Asylum in the past I've had to locate my previous versions. I'm hoping I can just buy it, when in ready and use it with my old files without having to hunt down previous versions. In fact, some years ago I had to buy a used disc on amazon and got the closest one to the last upgrade I had.

I reluctantly discarded desktops as I had to lug it for any repairs to the shop. Laptop is much easier that way to transport. I have two laptops. I use the one with Windows 7, not the one with Windows 10; old is still gold for me! siva

A good point, but I do not need the help of a computer repair shop and prefer my desktop. Old operation systems still work as well as they originally did, but there are problems. Microsoft no longer provides updates and newer programs and hardware will not work with Windows 7.

I gave up my desktop long ago. I just replaced my Dell with a MacBook Pro last summer and love it. It's light as a feather and so easy to travel with.

There are many benefits with a desktop. They are far easier to repair or upgrade and can support far higher resources than a laptop.
